Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee. The first Catholic man tells his friends, "My son is a priest, when he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father'." The second Catholic man chirps, "My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Grace'." The third Catholic gent says, "My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone says 'Your Eminence'." The fourth Catholic man then says, "My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Holiness'." Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, the four men give her a subtle, "Well....?" She proudly replies, "I have a daughter, slim, tall, 38D breast, 24" waist and 34" hips. When she walks into a room, people say, "Oh My God!"1 point

10% Economies of scale, 10% high quality control, 80% Fancy Swiss brand with huge consumer loyalty taking the mickey with their prices. I'm sure if the oils were the same quality and half the price there are people who wouldn't buy it if because it doesn't seem expensive enough.1 point
-
I think it's priced the way it is because it's scientific glass, with the basket mod, with a small market. If you don't drop it you'll use it 2-3 times/day for 20 years, so not so expensive. As for Fixodrop itself, again, small market, high tech chemical, price goes up. Same with Moebius oil, it seems expensive till you realize how much work one can do with a given quantity. I find synthetic motor oils expensive given the size of the market. But they are better so I'll buy them.1 point

Hey bjd. Sorry to hear about this fiasco and the subsequent scam those crooks tried to pull. The 7750 is a robust and quite serviceable mechanism whether elabore or standard as you are well aware, so its a quality control problem with the Oris watch crown. Was it spring loaded? It should "pop out" when unscrewed. If the spring was weak or damaged, or the seals on the case tube are tight/dry, the crown will not pop out as quickly (or as far )which leads to cross threading when re-tightening. In any case, four years is too short a time, and that threading should NOT wear down so it was a problem with material and/or manufacturing. I'm guessing the watchcase tube threading is OK? I'll keep an eye out for a replacement crown...there's always something on the bay. J1 point

What do you recommend instead? Nerves of steel and a good eye. A very fine oiler you know and trust.1 point

On one of Marc's videos, he found this had been done at the factory on a new movement (chinese?)1 point

Tne tension ring can be replaced and installed easy. You may find crystal with ring in it hard to install, the tension ring jumps out if pressed. I have got some Genuine seiko crystals, well I have got bunch of genuine most parts. Give diameter and height, I will dig in my bag of tricks. Regards1 point

Thanks Andy. I am not going for a high gloss French polish finish on this one as it’s a prototype to show a guy an idea for a project. If he goes for it then we will work on the finish and tweak the design. I never was much good at drawing so making it seemed the best way to go. It’s all from scrapage and spares from down the shed and it’s kept me busy for a couple of days.1 point

So just to quickly update this conversation with my own experience to date. I got the wireless connecting microscope I mentioned above, and... It'll make a neat toy for the grandkids. The picture is pretty bad, with a lot of edge chromatic aberration due to the plastic optics. And the small options for setting the device resolution mean that the picture is out of whack on an iDevice, due to them not having standard HD resolutions. Obviously you get what you pay for - and this is essentially a toy. I'm inclined to just practice more with and get used to wearing a headband magnifier (I wear glasses, so need something that caters for them). Can anyone recommend a good model of the headband variety? Again I went for the cheapo option when I bought one, and it's both uncomfortable and quite flimsy (the hinged lens holder has a habit of swinging loose at critical moments...)1 point

The balance staff needs replacing. The hairspring needs to be sorted. Someone has been digging around to compensate for the wear of the staff. Even if you got hold of a complete balance, you still might have trouble, all due to someone’s shoddy work.1 point

Thank you folks for replying . My friend is going to get back in touch with the jeweler to find out exactly what the name is of the part(s) that needs replacing, is. I guess we (he) should have lead with that. Before clapping eyes on his watch's internal workings, i've barley ever worked on anything like a watch (looks pretty fascinating - tho i somehow doubt he'll let me do a maiden voyage on this watch ). I apologise if i have wasted anybody's time, it was not intentional, rather a learning curve. If we do get the name of the part(s) needed, would it be ok to mention them here, and see if/where we could get it/them?1 point

Now solved! I figured the canon pinion in center was too tight, so used your suggestion to loosen it supplied by rolling it forth/back on rear of a thick oiler Moreover, I slightly tightened the offset minor canon pinion and now all hands moving without too low/high friction when setting. Thanks again!1 point

That’s a nice looking watch. The two tone bamboo dial especially sets it off. Hope you get the keyless works running smoothly and all problems resolved. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

ST 96 I believe.very common.you don't even have to take the movement out of the case to replace the mainspring.1 point

Thanks Nigel but I am wanting to improve/mod/learn on this one, not just return to working condition. I am going to make my own dial - it will probably be very simple.1 point

ST movement, parts are available, easy to service. Did you say you got a screwdriver? Lets attack.1 point

Hi paul, I am not proud of my painting skills, yet this may give you an idea. Dial indicators are embossed so you need not be a painter to wipe them clean after you spray the dial plate. So I would choose a used dial you like, one that paint on it already fainted. Reposition the feet to fit the movement, no paint at this point, to get damaged as you weld feet. Spray the dial plate and wipe the emblem and indicator. That is all I know, I swear.1 point

In case anyone is looking for the datasheet for this movement series, I managed to get a copy finally after 3 months of looking from a swiss museum. So excited to finally have something on this lovely old movement! AS341.pdf1 point

The case is unmarked, looks new. Has a screw back also. It's my ''play with'' watch as the movement was knackered.1 point

Its an appealing looking watch, but I get what you say about the date window. I must admit though given the choice I would probably spend my £245 (RRP in the UK) on something else. For another twenty quid you can get a Tissot chrono. Tissot Chrono XL Classic Men's Watch T1166171603700 Or their Tissot Watch Couturier - probably the same engine, but a less fussy dial. Alternatively Seiko, Casio, et all do some very nice offerings in the same price range.1 point
-
That's very elegant looking. The date window initially looks odd but I think that's more to do with being used to the date window replacing the 3 on the dial. I'd personally prefer the date at 6 but otherwise it's a clean and elegant watch and mechanical which as per old hippy is a bonus.1 point

I wonder if this one isn't a new version of an old Watch with a quartz movement in it.. So instead of a large movement ring i would take a guess it has a wide dial ring. Kind of like it except the logo...1 point
-
I agree I don't like the date window next to the 3, I hadn't thought about a large movement ring until I read what you had typed, but I agree you are probably correct.1 point

I like a watch to have a nice clear dial with the date at 3 and easy to see. The hands are a nice old-fashioned style. The black and gold go together well. The only thing for me is the tissot logo it is a bit over powering. As its manual and not quartz, for me that is a big plus. I hate quartz watches and clocks.1 point

it would sit more flush, and since you aren"t getting full insertion it might solve your problem1 point

No problem. It could be one of several different mechanisms. No telling what's in it. once we figure out what it is , we can figure out a fix.1 point

We need to see the movement. Could you please open the back and show us?1 point

A very small Catholic parish agreed with the priest that the trim around their mostly stone church was in bad need of a new coat of paint. Lacking much in the way of funds, they advertised for bids, emphasizing the need for economy. One local house painter of questionable reputation looked the job over and thought to himself, "I can make a quick buck here if I play my cards correctly". He submitted a very low bid and sure enough, the parish secretary phoned him a few days later to let him know that he had been awarded the job. The painter's plan was simple enough. He had just enough old paint left over from previous jobs and would not only mix them together, but also thin them severely so that he could cover the trim with new paint for only the cost of his labor. Accordingly, he arrived on the job site with his paint, rollers and brushes and began painting furiously. He needed to get the paint applied, collect his money and depart before a looming black rain cloud dumped rain on his fresh paint. That would wash all of his thinned paint from the trim and create a very expensive problem for him. He was applying paint to the last 50 ft or so of trim when the skies opened and it poured down in buckets for close to 1/2 hour without letup. The painter had taken refuge inside the church and upon exiting and looking up at his now thoroughly ruined paint, he thought to himself, now what am I to do? Right on cue a deep, resonant voice spoke to him from the departing storm clouds above. "My son, repaint and thin no more".1 point

The NH36 is the same basic movement as the 7S26, but with more jewels, hacking and winding. If you wish to keep the watch more functionally correct in respect to the the 7S26, why not buy a 7S36 movement? Exactly the same as the 7S26 but with two additional jewels. No hacking or winding either. Seiko 7S26C_36C.pdf1 point

At GBP 16.90 + shipping i would not rush to buy. A brand new mvt can be bought for USD 36 or little more for an NH36 which winds and hacks. You can get a good one from a busted mov.t, PM if you want.1 point

When it comes to the pallets, the only part that should be oiled are the pallet stone faces. Never oil the pivots of the pallets as it will cause drag and the movement will fail to keep time. You must use the correct oil for the escapement, if you are not sure which; look for one that specifically says for watch escapements. Some watchmakers prefer to oil the teeth of the escape wheel and let the combined action of pallets and escape wheel to distribute the oil. Pallet stones should be smooth on their face, any marks, chips and they should be re-placed. The stone is harder than the escape wheel so it is most likely it also is worn.1 point

Yes but mine is this one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/600X-3-6MP-USB-Digital-Microscope-4-3-Display-LCD-Electronic-HD-Video-Stand-Kit/183572621415?epid=21026543881&hash=item2abdc7e867:g:kdMAAOSwM7Fcqz8d Using it as in the pic, you are working on the small base area. If you turn the whole lot around as if you are looking at the back and then turn the screen and scope around to face you, you are not restricted to working on that small base. At that though it will be top heavy so you need to place a counter balance weight on the little base to stop it falling over. I also work off a piece of yellow card marked with datum lines so I can focus the scope and place tiny parts exactly in the spot under the scope. If that doesn't help I'll have to set it up and post a pic. (Nearly forgot to add the pics, video and battery life are excellent. Reckon my battery lasts about 6 hours)1 point

Wow - I would never have thought of that. I will have to investigate this (if I don't find something more "off the shelf" first)1 point

Perhaps only members with a reasonable contribution rate or length of membership could join the swap shop or trade section. This would weed out the members who are only interested in selling or buying. Sometimes looking for spares even for a common movement can be a nightmare and then find its cheaper to purchase a complete scrap movement. I suspect all enthusiasts on this forum have lots of spares that they might never use. With regard to tools I would think this would be useful to a lesser extent because we all like to keep backup tools and we are natural hoarders so not very much would be available.1 point
