I am a sucker for coin silver interestingly engraved 18s pocket watches (wow that was a mouthful)

This is a Waltham 18s Ellery 11jewel hunter made in 1885in a coin silver case. It was a bit sad when I bought it . I striped it down cleaned it, replaced the mainspring , replaced the crystal, installed a new balance jewel and cleaned what turned out to be a really great looking case that was black.

As I said I love an interesting engraved case, and this Huge Bull is great.

I got this Bulova Oceanographer for a good price several month ago only to find out that the movement was incomplete . 

Actually , I didn't even know what the proper movement for it was supposed to be . After some research and inquiries on the Bulova forum I decided that the Automatic movement 11ANACB was the likely contender , so after a few failed attempts to at securing the missing parts with great help from my buddy and fellow forum member , ramrod , I finally got this puppy running again .

A nice looking watch in the flesh even if my pics don't do it justice .

Made in Croydon circa 1938, a lovely example of a pin pallet movement. Sadly I sacrificed two hairsprings to achieve the geometry I was looking for. Very pleased with the accuracy given its age. I’d love to put it on a timegrapher to check the beat error.

Very Nice Joe . Do you know which movement is in your models ?

I have one or two Snorkel models of these  and maybe a Caravelle also boxed up in storage .

 

I've taken the liberty to add a few more pics of the watch and  the Donor movement I finally acquired.......

Here's a picture of my Bulova Snorkel. I had to do a screenshot off my photobucket as it doesn't let you save your own photos. Bad job Photobucket..  The actual watch is in storage somewhere.

I've had it around 25 years now and its still working fine. I can't really remember what movement is inside but its probably similar to the 11BLACD above. I believe this is the first model Snorkel.. the later ones had the raised lume-filled cylinder hour markers.

Wearing a Nivada Aquadatic Antarctic 21jewels for the last few days. Time has been kind to it and the dial is very clean.  All it needs is a new crystal as the current one has a small crack at 9 o'clock. 

It has an ETA1256, all other ETA automatics how their origins in this movement.

I just got this Bulova Oceanographer Snorkel out of my storage . I sure like this one . Handsome looks to it in my opinion . I'm not quite sure how the bezel is constructed . It seems to have a clear glass / crystal material over the Pepsi numerals  .

It's nice to have it on again.....

Whilst on the subject of Bulova divers, here's my contribution from 1979.

Just bought a Favre-Leuba Sea Raider 2 from a local seller (in Malaysia), cost was approx USD100 incl shipping. 

I've been a fan of Favre-Leuba for a long time and I've been looking out for a Sea Raider but they usually fetch a high price (for me). This one was advertised on a local facebook group and I didn't waste time grabbing it. 

It's a very chunky design that screams 70s... 

The dial is in good condition,  there is some marks along the edge... this could be some lume material from the hands or wear caused by the dial rubbing against the case/crystal revealing the brass dial material.  If it's wear it can be masked by colouring the visible brass with some black paint or even a sharpie. The day and date wheels have faded to the point that they're barely legible. 

Case is really big.. Look at how low the crown is! 

Case back is pretty low-relief. I imagine having a deeply embossed case back would probably give you a mark on your wrist! 

Did I mention the case was big? It won't fit comfortably under your sleeve. 

The case originally had contrasting polished and brushed finish.. Someone has tries to re-do it but it's still not perfect, if you look at the dial closeup above,  you can see some pitting around the 11 and 9-10 markers. 

It's powered by a FL 1164 hi beat calibre.. Which is based on the AS1167/1168.

Well that's one more ticked off my list.

Starting the day with this Titus........

Dug out this Rado President, it uses an AS1702 with 21jewels. Pretty good except that it has these cap jewels which are pretty much permanently affixed. These have been discussed on this forum with no clear solution.

Pretty basic dial, the Rado, anchor and 'President' are printed directly on the dial. Additionally the dial is engraved with fine concentric circles. Hard to photograph. Side note: If the Rado anchor is printed directly on the dial, its a hand-wind. If its mounted on a 'jewel' and can rotate freely then its an automatic.

Instead of the Rado anchor on the crown, it has an 'R' which is what Rado used in the fifties to the early sixties.

Caseback is normal.. nothing fancy but it has character. I've had this watch for at least 10 years and I remember the caseback was a **BLEEP** to remove. I had to bring it to a friend who had workbench opener to open it!

And inside we have the aforementioned AS1702 movement..Looks pretty good for something approaching 60years old! Unfortunately the case has some scars visible due to water being trapped under the gasket, in this case I would imagine a lead gasket?

Anilv ',.... Thanks for sharing the Rado Info and Pics . I did enjoy your presentation enhanced with your commentary . Interesting info about the dial and crown Anchor . And Yes , the movement does look well preserved .

In All , a very classic , clean looking watch .
