Measuring watch Hands

Recommended Posts

You can do a quick search of the internet, you should use the following site to find out movement specs,

www.ranfft.de

from this site I see that the hands are hour 1.50, minute 0.90, and seconds hand 0.21

A close match to Hands of the style you need are available from various sites, www.cousinsuk.com stock this style but the centre seconds hand with square luminous tip may be a problem to find.

Thanks, I found the www.ranfft.de site but it listed the 25 jewels and not 17 jewels of the movement so I was not sure if this was the right hands size. Should I buy and take the chance?
Yes IMHO ... Different variations of a same movement often wear the same hands.
BTW what happened to the dial ?
It looks like somebody stripped all the lumed parts off [emoji39]

My friend tried to get the parts and lost the energy, so I took it. I am not watch expert but I thought if I can get some advice from the community I might be able to atleast get hands and see where we go from there.

Do you know if these lumed parts can be fixed? I am sure it will need a service too after the hands are added..

You measure from the centre of the dial outwards to about 2 thirds over the numbers, make sure you leave enough room for the hands to go round, you do not want them catching on the inside of the glass.  Then you pick a style and colour that is suitable to the dial and case. If that is the case you want chrome or silver looking.

Hi, Thanks for the help. The picture, video of the movement outside of the case with new hands installed.

I ordered the hands day before your comment, it seems I ordered a little longer based on your comment. I will check the size again and get shorter ones. Next step is to add back to the case and see if it still works.

I saw that too and notice the OP's shown above also has Wimding.  Is this a "thing"?

LE JOUR being a swiss company possibily, it's possible that the guys that designed the dial where french speaking.

I'm French and I COULD write wiMding instead of wiNding ... an error that a native English speaker wouldn't do.

Look at the the "spatiale" and the "grands fonds" ... the dials are "french" and there is no misspelling.

The hour and minute hands are not only too long but :

- they are too thin

- the are not squared at the end

- they lack the "contrepoids" (I'm not 100% certain about the english term but I would write "counterwieght")

Look at that pic

The hour hand and minute hand should be the same width, the couterwieght are about the same length.

The only difference is the length of the part that hold the lume.

I wish you good luck in your research for the right hands, because you'll need some.

Here's a pic of a ZIM watch with hands that are more similar to the hands you need (you still can rework them a little and paint them black).

s-l1600.thumb.jpg.d4788d586c85cc3b698f6e923d7a8066.jpg

ZIM 2602 hands are : Hour 1,60 - Minute 0,88

PUW 1463 hands are : Hour 1,50 - Minute 0,90

So if those hands are OK about the length (just ask the seller) you can close a little the Hour hand tube and open a little the Minute hand tube.

The seller is topdom789 and he's a really nice guy (old horologist from Bulgaria).

I bought 2 Raketa movements from him last year ... I paid USD10 only for the 2 movements and he serviced them before shipping.

If those hands are too short or too long you can tell him what you need and he'll search if he can find hands that match your needs.

    • I have read some suggestions that it can cause wear , particularly on the fork horns of a fully treated pallet fork. I've had half a kilo of steriac acid powder on a shelf for almost a year now, might have a little play today with a heater and a jar.
    • As I'm only cleaning watches in small numbers at home, I pre-clean any significant deposits of old grease and oil before using the cleaning solutions. I scrape off deposits with pegwood and Rodico, and if really dirty, wash parts in naphtha with a brush.  So I'm happy using DX, but can understand why it's avoided by the pros.
    • I think attaching a nut to the lid to pull it off is the least destructive, any damage damage on the outside is going to an easier fix than any created when trying to push it out from the inside. Scratching up the inside of the lid , mainspring or arbor bearing will be risk. Just my opinion.
    • yes the things we read in the universe I did see some where it was either difficult to clean off or it contaminated the cleaning fluid there was some issue with cleaning. I was trying to remember something about grease where as opposed to a substance of a specific consistency they were suggesting it had a base oil with something to thicken it. That conceivably could indicate that the two could separate and that would be an issue. But there is something else going on here that I had remembered so I have a link below and the description of the 9501 notice the word that I highlighted? Notice that word appears quite a bit on this particular page like 9415 has that property all so they 8200 mainspring grease and that definitely has to be mixed up when you go to use it because it definitely separates. just in case you didn't remember that nifty word there is a Wikipedia entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thixotropy   https://www.moebius-lubricants.ch/en/products/greases I wonder if what you're seeing is the boron nitride left behind after cleaning. In other words it's the high-pressure part of the grease and it's probably embedding itself into the metal which is why it doesn't clean off and shouldn't be a problem?
    • Yes and no. I use Moebius 9501 synthetic grease and it is significantly runnier than the Moebius 9504 synthetic grease (and I assume Molykote DX) that I previously used. I haven't seen 9504 spread and it is in my opinion the best grease money can buy. However, my current method of cleaning doesn't remove it from the parts, so that's why I have decided to use the 9501 instead. I believe I read somewhere that Molykote DX too is difficult to clean off. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure my 9501 grease which expired in June 2022 is runnier now than it was when it was new, but whether new or old it always needs to be stirred before use. So, that's why I treat the parts of the keyless works, cannon pinion, etc. with epilame. That was very thoughtful of you and something that had completely passed me by. Not sure what the epilame will do when it wears off in a non-oiled hole. Anyone?
