  2. Hello everyone ,please take care and look after yourselves and families as the world wide lockdowns continue I hear the rattling noises of screwdrivers and parts as we all pull out the watches we were going to do one day.Remember none of us are invincible https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

  3. That is almost impossible. Can be done by removing the thin washer. But it's hard to put it back again. Can maybe be done like this. https://adventuresinamateurwatchfettling.com/2015/10/12/crown-revival-seiko-6105-and-62mas-crown-gasket-replacement/

  4. I understand and no worries Mr. @Graziano! It's very generous of you to be "taking out the relevant information". Just include a link as well, and we'll all be happy!

  9. I don't go out much anyways, so I'm used to being home. I come under the list of vulnerable not just because of my age but I'm a diabetic. I have stocked up on lager and I have plenty of food in. At this sad time I sure miss my two cats. Stay safe everyone.

  10. Don't judge me, you would have done the same. It was only 0.99p I couldn't help myself. I was bored. It does have a nice Chinese standard skeletonized movement, and .. errr... Its shiny... very shiny.... OK, it doesn't actually work.. but nobodies perfact. Maybe I'd better switch off this internet thing before I buy anything else... Yet another non runner Chinese standard movement watch. I think I have enough Chinese standard movement watches to set up a separate branch of the 404 club.

  12. Are your two rotations being measured from the extreme clockwise extent of the rotation to the extreme anti-clockwise extent, or from the rest point (I.e. with the impulse pin in between the pallet fork horns and central to the banking pins and the balance at rest) and either of the two rotational extremes? If the former then although a full 720 degrees is problematic (between the two extremes of rotation), 620 to 630 is fine as this equates to an amplitude of 310 degrees(ish), and could be mistaken for two full rotations at a glance. If the latter then it's an intriguing problem as it means that the impulse pin is somehow bypassing the pallet fork on the first rotation, but catching it on the second. This would also have some significant implications for the hair spring which will be winding up and unwinding by twice the normal amount in each direction.

  13. Which is a very normal when someone with zero knowledge thinks to know better and goes to attack his nice watch. To be blunt you risk to end in the same situation, with slim chances of having it run good again, or run at all. The only way to increase chances of success is that you get proper tools and practice on so nothing else before.

  15. Some may debate me on my comments, but the FACTS prove otherwise. There are many Americans who align themselves with a specific political party who tend to believe this is all "fake news" and "over-hyped by sensationalist media"! I can promise you it's very real and very deadly! The youth, generally speaking, have a sense of immortality it seems. They take a blase attitude towards most things that aren't actively effecting them. That will change too! The best thing for everyone is to do what the medical professionals are saying to do! They have the right of it. Honk Kong is already paying the price for lifting restrictions too early. Let's learn from their mistake. My employer is also essential (defense industry) SO I will be at work through this as well. Ultimately, every be sensible and stay safe, God Bless!

  17. Hi, Hector here. I am a dentist by training and it has been my day job for the past 34 years. My other pastimes include building and repairing all sorts of stuff. Just keeping my office equipment in working order has made me learn plumbing, electricity, electronics, computing... Jack of all trades, master of none. I took up a basic course in watch repair about 1 1/2 years ago because I couldn't find any watch repairer willing to repair my daily ticker. And I got hooked! In the last 18 months, I've serviced mechanical, automatic, quartz, electric, an Accutron, a long case clock, a ship's clock, kitchen timers... It has been a really interesting, challenging, frustrating and rewarding 18 months. And I look forward to the next project...

  19. Oh yes. One must have two cats. One will annoy you while two will annoy each other! From yesterday, I can offer proof that I did NOT spend the afternoon in the easy chair. Actually had considered watching a televised repeat of a 1986 NASCAR race. Back when Real men drove Real cars in NASCAR. But I got sidetracked in the workshop. I am attempting to build a long range microphone so the wife can hear the frogs in the forest. Hey, keeps me busy in the house and away from humanity. I spend most of my time at home since retiring. At least until the fishing starts up. A friend in the city says he is not bored yet, but is amazed to find 14,283 grains of rice in one box whilst there are only 13,997 in another. Hmmm. I'm coughing my head off, but believe it to be a cold. Have no temperature and can still eat anything in sight. I am encouraged. Take care of yourselves and family!

  21. You should get yourself another cat when all this is over there are plenty of rescue cats looking for good homes both young and old cats, every cat I've had has either been a stray or a rescue cat, last year we took in a pregnant stray female and had four kittens running around the house, all now re-homed, apart from the mother we had her spayed and kept her.

  22. The situation is very worrying I have two elderly parents that have underlying health problems, the way things are going here in the U.K we will be in the same position as Italy are now within a couple of weeks, I'm sickened by the lack of regard and common sense of the younger generations in this country, who seem to think they are invincible and immune to the virus, yesterday I wanted to go to the local shop for milk and bread after work, there was a large group of youths just stood around outside and I would have had to walk through the crowd so I decided not to bother, the message is not getting through about social distancing at all.

  23. Yup, pull out those old projects to see if skills have progressed enough to complete them. I'm looking at my lathe as it calls to me to really learn how to use it, especially to make a balance staff. Of course I might have to find a higher table/bench to place it on, as where it is is pretty low and my neck doesn't like it. Yes, everyone be careful. I'm using hand sanitizer (Purchased a few days before the big run on it.) whenever I'm out and have touched shared surfaces, etc. Lots of hand washing. too. I do have a couple of N95 masks that I've had for a while. I might wear one the next time I go to the market. That said, if I can stay far enough away from other shoppers I probably won't need it. It may be best to save it in the event that I do get sick with the virus. Take care, all.

  26. That is an interesting little watch. If you look closely you can see that it has multiple LEDs per segment. There seems to have been a number of different technological jumps, which slowly improved on the reliability and readability of LED watches. The Timex module looks relatively primitive compared with some. That Omega may use bubble display type LED modules, which tended to be more reliable, but also more expensive than the bare die construction of the Timex. Here are some bubble type display modules, which had a primitive lens to make the display look larger and brighter. These ones are on a lead frame, so they can be PCB mounted, but they also came in custom arrangements, including later in their development surface mount, and even some dot matrix modules that could display a full range of ASCII characters. The Timex digits are single LEDs per segment, so when one led fails the whole segment is toast. You can also see that one of the bond wires is obscuring the bottom corner of the left most digit in the pictures of the Timex. The seven segment Omega modules were much better constructed, with very short bind wires on to the adjacent substrate and since they had multiple LEDs per segment, a single LED failing open circuit, didn't render the watch completely unreadable. All of this died a rapid death when reliable LCD displays came on the market, since they were much more reliable, used far less current, and could be fabricated in any custom arrangement you could think of. These early LCDs did however require a split voltage power supply, as you need to drive them with pulsed DC in both directions as it were, other wise they fail or become unreadable. The circuitry to drive an LED by comparison is very simple.

  28. Meet Joey. I collected him on Friday from an owner who has four dogs. He really was not happy at home, feeling bullied by his canine cohabitants. 48 hours into his new abode and he seems to be settling in just fine. [emoji6] As you can see, he is a ginger long hair, so we will both need to get used to a grooming regime. He’s like a little lion! Life is beginning to feel better again with a cat in the home. 31. That's probably not the best watch to do your first staff on. There are probably at least two different pivot size options, then perhaps differences in the roller table fitting or balance hole diameter. Add to that it likely has been restaffed at least once to several times, and the balance jewels may be cracked or have been changed to different/wong size in the past. All that said, there are references out there that should indicate the theoretical correct staff, a couple of members here have the info and will certainly chime in. Give it a try, but if you hit a snag don't get discouraged- it could be several things outside of your control.

  33. My job has been deemed to be essential so I will still be going to work, no I don't have anything to do with the medical profession, I help maintain data centers. They have pretty much shut down our head office and I've been sent to spend each day sitting at one of our data centers in case something goes wrong, so even if they lock the city down I would be given a pass to still travel to and from work, so no extra time for me on those 'One Day' projects. Though like Oldhippy I just lost one of my cats on Saturday, but it had been a long time coming, it was 19 years old and had been on anti-inflammatories and pain killers for several months but late last week she ran out of 'good days' and we had to take her to the vet on Saturday and see her off. Sad as it was it was the correct decision to make. Her sister has been wondering around the house trying to find her for the last couple of days now.
