An S T Dupont - Paris - "Dupont" 17 Jewel small dress watch is on its way. Possibly gold plated, but.. who knows.

This is another 404 club candidate. Described as a non runner,  I have no idea what ails it, nor what makes it run, but the sub 404 club price means that finding this out wont be too fiscally painful.

The listing also states "..Japanese made with stainless steel back, shock proof and Full Lever movement foreign...", but this is after all an ebay listing, so some, all, or indeed none of this may be true. If true, then possibly a Seiko or Citizen movement. Time will tell.

EDIT: I found a couple of steel/white metal cased versions, and this might be what is inside. Can anybody identify the movement from my terrible picture? It does look pretty familiar. Maybe a Bostok 2605

I’m no expert Andy but the B like symbol does look like the Bostock/Vostock logo.

I found a slightly better image from a different Dupont watch, which looks more like what you've got there to my eye:

image.png.1d8b0c08c90fbe095381b8be2479cf1b.png

Not sure if that's helpful--I can't read much on it beyond the serial number.

Edit: ah hah! I thought that said 1601. From here, listed as a "Tchaïka 1601".

image.png.3e6d51f8c598e75e24daae3c5c929863.png

And I feel like I've seen that hallmark before...yes! Here at Watchuseek forums, listed as a Soviet era Vostock

image.thumb.png.0faed0012a6d5cf139d90bd3ddb63ec8.png

And here is some more info on a Chaika 1601A movement, which looks right to me.

Thanks. I thought it looked very familiar. The one I purchased hasn't arrived yet, but I'm pretty sure you have nailed the identification of the movement. Better still, I have some parts movements, so if there are any problems with it, I should have the parts.

Its interesting that a high end French jewellery chain should go for a USSR produced movement and not, for example a Lip or similar.  I guess they used them for the same reason that Sekonda in the UK did. They were relatively inexpensive but also relatively well made.

Speaking of Lip, the Chaika 1601/1601a and the Zim 2602 and the Bostok all appear to be derived from the Lip R-26

There is a discussion about this here -> https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/lip-r26-vs-pobeda.12673/

I just got my first Lordmatic earlier this month. It was a non-runner from Japan. The movement lock ring was jammed so tight that I had a hard time getting it out. The previous watchmaker must have given up because the all the screws looked pristine.

The second wheel jewel was broken and by some miracle, I found an exact jewel in my collection of scrap jewels.

It's running again, although the positional variation in the amplitude and rate is not perfect.

Now I'm looking at getting a Lord Marvel or King Seiko.

I especially like the look of this one, perhaps you could change out the bracelet for a grey metal one to match the dial (titanium/gun-metal etc)? I have a love-hate relationship with chronographs, I think they look great, but on my wrist they are too complicated for a quick glance to check the time, so for me they are impractical unless just for aesthetic value. I have tried to get used to them as, like I said, I really like the look of them, but just cant get over the mental hurdle and I'm a little jealous of those who can wear them as a daily driver.... we all have our crosses to bare...😄

New years resolution; "I want to improve my cleaning".

My first purchase (no, not a watch but a 2nd-hand machine) this year. Should arrive next week 🙂

Just arrived, a Longines 30L.

I've been looking for one of these for a long time. I've been a fan of Longines since I got my first, I love the quality and elegance.

In the thread "looking for a simple, ultra-precise hand-wound movement - suggestions?", @nickelsilver suggested the larger Longines (30mm movements).  The higher grade version of this movement  (30Z) were used as observatory chronometers. So I decided I needed one. I'm expecting good performance. It's not going to just sit in one of my cases, I'm going to regularly use it.

I bought it as "spares or repair", so was expecting a damaged balance. But on first look, the balance and hairspring seem perfect. It just seems to have a broken mainspring. Result 😀

BTW @nickelsilver, you also recommended Peseux as good movements. I bought a cheap Rotary with a Peseux 7050. Looked like it had been serviced by a gorrilla - the pallet fork was bent about 30°, missing pallet jewel, hairspring all out of shape. So I wasn't expecting great performance. On the timegrapher yesterday, looking good !

(I'll be buying more Peseux - good quality at a good price 👍 )

With some luck, this Tula-silver PW should arrive next week. Seller says it runs in all positions. Havila movement "B".

A beautiful timepiece as always. I envy your ability to find these "gems". I'm not into pocket watches, but nevertheless. Oh BTW, really clever to ask the seller if it runs in all positions. If it doesn't run in a certain position it likely has a broken staff, and broken staff on these old watches is of course very common.

Congrats!

That's one gorgeous timepiece! 😀 There is so much to like about it. Among other things, just to mention something, the crown looks spectacular. Congrats!

As a result of the same thread, I got myself a Peseux 7040 which I have just serviced. Tentatively it looks very good on my TM. Very straight and stable lines, although not with the same nice amplitude as you got, but still good.

Yes, I've been screwed once.

A PW was sold by a "seasoned" seller as a runner, even with a short video of a moving balance. But with a broken balance-staff pivot the watch ran only in one position, just like in his video ....... another hard lesson learned 😑

Luckily, it had a CYMA movement and I could find, with the help of members here, a new balance staff ....... 😉

Ever since, this question is included.

On the way, the tiniest Accutron, and my first 404 club-eligible project (since I've learned about it, anyway). "Untested", so expectations are low.

I finally got a chance to take a quick look at this watch.
CleanedDialSide.thumb.jpg.9a4b7482102b99a11643fa324f45c47b.jpgA
What wasn't apparent from the listing is that it has a very nice deep blue dial, which of course the camera entirely fails to do justice to.

Mechanism.thumb.jpg.42c8aa0a17a861df56b15c2be101e6f1.jpg

It is indeed a Chaika 1601A furthermore it actually runs. It keeps time, but the amplitude is low.
It is in dire need of a service, and possibly a mainspring.

I'm pretty sure I have a few other Chaika 1601A scrap movements in my box of USSR spares, so I should have everything I need to get it running well.
I'm not sure if the case is gold plated or not. Quite a few of the USSR watches I have, are.  I suspect if it is GP, it has barely a sniff of gold on it.  I'm very pleased with it, especially since it is a 404 club watch.

So long as a leaking battery hasn't eaten anything important, there is a good chance it might just work.

No such luck. That said, it's also *very* hard to set and the date quickset doesn't appear to be working. I haven't uncased it yet, but there's no obvious evidence of a battery leak. To the project box!

Any chance of opening the back please? Would like to see the movement.

I own the original Omega professional Speedmaster Mark II (1975, 861 movement), which is stunning, but my real love is the 861 "Moon-watch".

Looking at the prices asked for these real "moon-watches" (and one doesn't even know in which condition the movement is), I'm afraid that one will stay a dream and the Mark II will be as close as I will ever get ........which is pretty darn close, so no complains here !! 🙂

However, today I discovered the Pagani Design PD-1701 V3, a design "borrowed" from, or as they like to say "inspired by", the Omega Speedmaster.

It has a Seiko VK63 quartz ("terrible") movement 😔, but with (at least something) a mechanical chronograph 😃.

My Mark II has a mineral glass crystal and I'm scared to scratch it, so sadly, despite I wished for that it could be different, it won't be my daily watch.

The Pagani PD-1701 V3 may just fill the gap; a "moon-watch" look, sapphire crystal and for "no" money; € 120 including shipment .......

The reviews are good, so I ordered one ...... 🤗

If, at a certain moment, it gets too "quartzy" for me, I can swap to the real deal 😎

Very curious about this Pagani 🫣

I'm certainly not into quartz movements / watches, but I have to say that I'm impressed with how the VK63 is build; my hats off !

@Endeavor I would much rather have the pagani with the seiko mechaquartz than the moonswatch for double the money. Been thinking about one of these for a while, please report back with your opinion on it.

double

€5000 - €6000 for an original Speedmaster, €120 for this one => 41 x or more 🙂

And the 861 movements are getting older and they have their, not easy to fix, wear & tear flaws.

Even though I'm not into quarts, I think this Seiko movement looks quite nice.

I'll give you a review in a few weeks time 😉

    • I sure appreciate your comment! I will look into one of those or maybe something similar. I of course will check your video to have a better idea.  by the way, that’s a beautiful lathe! Mine is a little peersless, but I just bought a Boley & Leinen that is on its way. That’s the one I am looking a motor for. It comes with a motor, but I want to replace it for  one that has a speed controller.
    • Indeed. I would not attempt one. Here is my messy Sherline setup
    • Hello everyone my name is Tom and I and I am new to the forum and new to the hobby. I have always had an interest in mechanical watches and finally decided to pursue it. I’m going thru online trading and have purchased the basic tools to set up a work area. I’m really looking forward to learning and thank you in advance for all of your knowledge!
    • This conversation is becoming a very confusing. The etachron system is a very nice system for manufacturing watches. As you know it consists of two components the stud and the regulator pins. Beautiful thing of this system is you can open up your regulator pins center the hairspring and as you close the pins they will close equally on both sides providing you centered it in the first place. It's not like you're going to become closer to one side or the other as the definition of the regulator pins is a bit confusing it's not exactly a slot sort of. I'm thinking maybe a little eight reading will be helpful for you. Then the file name was changed by me at the US patent but the wording of Seiko may or may not actually be attached to it soared up? I just did that so I can find it in my files. Normally patents are in people's name if they work for a company the company name will be there you'll notice the person lives in Japan which is interesting as the name would imply that this is a Swiss product. Somewhere I think I have the patents for the stud and I believe that is Swiss like a lot of things their Japanese and Swiss and then the Japanese let the Swiss name stand as it seems you more popular in case as you read up on the patents of the regulator pins or pin will see and it should explain exactly how and why it works also why it's important to always close at an open in specific directions because the pins actually have a shaped to them it's very hard to see the shape as it's very tiny.   As a reminder with this system it's mass-produced. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they use cameras and computers to do all of the adjustments.  The meaning of this is that the majority of watches will function as there supposed to and do what they're supposed to do the system will allow us for some minor in tolerance and has more than likely as I said no human hand is ever touched those watches that's the way they left the factory and they work fine.
