Ever heard of Google Translate?

This is just a a bit of banter between two members who are capable of communicating in perfect English, but are using a foreign language for a lighthearted exchange. What's wrong with that? This is the Lounge, after all.

I use google translate a lot you might laugh I use it for German as I'm interested in things from Austria on Youtube. Well it looks as if I'm becoming unpopular on this language thing so I'll give in. No hard feeling members.

Old Hippy  you will never become un popular, You are entitled to your opinion the same as all the others. It would be a sad old world if we all agree with each other. In my opinion thats what forum s are all about, discussing things,  even contraversial subjects. so lets put it to bed and carry on.

English only please.

I am sorry if I offended.  I meant only to reassure  the other member that his German was fine and acceptable.  And that my "kitchen German" wasn't too much better.  I suppose I could have said that in English.

You didn't offend anyone. Friendliness and lightheartedness are always welcome here no matter the language and how sad our hearts can be at this time. Capisci?

Other than English I also speak "Cheap", and this lovely Benrus was that. It was from my "Dresser Drawer Auction" and has a Benrus FK 43/AS 1194 17 jewel movement. It was a non-runner but other than a damaged canon pinion it just needed a cleaning and a spare bracelet. Actually, it does need a crystal gasket which I still need to sort out.

I'm personally fine with an "English only" rule on the forum, but on the other hand foreign language phrases, especially with context shouldn't be cracked down on too hard, it can add that je ne sais quoi to the conversation

If he does maybe he will become a member of the 404 to buy list 🙂

This is a quartz watch I picked up at a garage sale for $1.  I thought it was mechanical because it did not say "Quartz."

I put the case through the ultrasonic and replaced the crystal.  Looks nice.  The AMD logo would indicate that it was given to an employee of AMD as a service award or something.  The case appears to be gold electroplate or just gold tone while the logo appears to be gold filled or solid gold.

Now I pile it up with the other watches...lol

I definitely would not have noticed the AMD logo had you not mentioned it. Even after, I had a hard time seeing it, and almost posted to the effect of "lets see the back" or or something, assuming that's where the logo was. Having recently built a high tech AMD-powered computer, it seems like they only recently became very competitive against Intel. Seeing such a relatively ancient relic in that context is very interesting.

I am running on a Rizen 9 5950 which my son built for me.  All of my builds have been AMD for awhile now.

I defended a patent case against the Rizen processor...and WON!!  Also defending a case against Xilinx that is now owned by AMD...so I guess I am in the AMD camp.

Lol. Looking back at what I wrote, I clearly said high tech in a very relative sense of the word! Relative compared to what would have been floating around back when whomever was doing their good work at AMD to have been given that watch. I think mine is a late Ryzen 5? It's a parts bin build. GPUs have been unobtainium and expensive lately between Covid-related shortages and the crypto mining craze, so it was essentially built around the GPU I could get my hands on at a reasonable price, then what I had lying around otherwise that would play nice.

Yeah, I could not get the GPU I wanted, so my son just gave me one of his cast offs (which was still quite good).  I think I waited six months for the Ryzen order to be filled.

AMD have been competitive off and on for many years. A (very) long time ago I inherited a 486 based board from a customer and built an enhanced AMD 486 machine from bits of this and that (possibly a Enhanced Am486 DX4-100), which I thought was a bit of a rocket ship for its time. I suspect that watch may be of a similar vintage.

Another lucky win, on there way to me. All qualifying comfortably. The Keinzle and Systema showed some signs of life in the photos. I'm hoping the Junghans just needs a crown and a service.

A couple more watches from the "Dresser Drawer" auction I won. These are two "Juvenia Sport" 'bag watches' from (I think) the 1930's. There are some halmark markings which I at first thought might indicate the case was made with silver but I didn't see any silver markings so I guess not.

One of the watches looks to have some sort of life form growing, I fear it may petition for self governance if I don't clean it soon. Is there any chance of bringing the leather back to life?

I found this on the interwebs, and in their full glory this is what they *should* look like:

Re: bringing the leather back to life, start with oil (I usually use olive oil for conditioning leather). It's pretty far gone, but that's where you'd start. From there, you could conceivably go so far as to re-patent it (boiled linseed oil and some sort of carbon black), but with it already on the watch, you will have a difficult time keeping it contained. You could split the difference, and find some linseed oil that's NOT boiled. It'll take many coats over a long time to get some shine back to it, and it won't get darker, but it'll get shinier as the fatty acids oxidize/polymerize.

Good stuff, I think I'll give that a try.

Another 404 club stopwatch.

This time branded "Smiths England".  I have no idea what is in it, however there is a very slight chance that it is more than a simple dollar watch style mechanism, since Smiths produced a wide variety of different grade movements. My gut feeling is that since it has no jewel count, it will be fairly basic inside. I'll just need to wait and see what turns up.

EDIT: Some googling and looking at near identical versions, suggests it is probably a Smiths SW43 movement (jewelled balance, no shock protection) in a Denison case.

If so, then well worth the 404 club price.

Nice Andy. I was looking at a something similar on ebay UK. I have a passion for smiths watches.  They turned out some really nice stuff but also some pretty basic crap as well. I was given one a few days ago and was fortunate enough for it to be half decent. 404. Is that 4 dollars 4 cents ? Can we have a brother club in UK, it will have to be a bit more though, I very rarely see anything for less than a fiver.  Don't suppose a free gift for being a nice person counts does it ?

Ah OK. So I've read back. £4.04.  That's a bit tough. Can we divide job lot prices into equal amounts and pick the best watch from it. Or is that cheating?

    • just a reminder about this test is it's not a perfect test it's a quick test. In other words you can adjust the banking pins that are both the same and visually this test will pass everything looks the same but both banking pins can be in the wrong place. although the majority of time when people are playing with banking pins I don't put them in the same place. one of things have to be careful of is I believe some of the pallet fork measuring tools that actually give you the roller jewel size are actually size so that I get confused? What I mean by this is if you inserted a whatever size in and are always told to go a slightly smaller I thought that the gauge itself its number corresponded to give you the exact number. So a lot of it depends upon the gauge itself I think you do want the roller jewel slightly smaller because it does have to fit in the slot and it does have a little bit a play. But if it's too small you will lose energy so does have to be sized right. Oh other things to check is? I'm attaching an Elgin sheet on checking the escapement I've seen references in the past to making sure that the slot in the four corn is nice and smooth and apparently you can end up with a rough slot and then the recommendation is to polisher clean that up. Not sure how well that's really going to work even if it has been the recommendation of other reference materials. yes art full plate watches fun when they don't work. This is where it's nice to have another set of eyes sometimes as maybe they'll find something you didn't  although that can add other issues. The owner of the shop provides himself on his skills of so now two of my watches have relocated to his bench to solve problems both real and imaginary I'm sure that will get fixed eventually hopefully. But still sometimes another set of eyes might see something that you're not. yes this sort of thing can be quite frustrating. Also makes for an interesting problem unless of course you're the one trying to solve the problem that it's a Escapement Elgin setting up the escapement.PDF
    • I’m not to sure mate! I’ve sent a picture! The crown is off a Tissot 1853 automatic limited edition T115427 A GP19 moto go watch!
    • For years and I'm still using it I've been using something called SeaMonkey? It's a Mozilla product Basically outscore its Firefox plus an integrated email program. But not the same problems here a lot of times when things are upgraded they tend to be now aimed at very specific browsers like Firefox so I've had to switch to Firefox to respond to any of the messages on the group. So yes they do seem to be getting more browser specific and that may be a reason for others having complications especially if whatever you using hasn't been updated. So yes the world is getting more browser specific perhaps for security reasons. Even though I use a product that is updated on a regular basis is still has problems. So whatever you using for browser should be up to date and if is not recognized it's going to be a problem.
    • I did remember to ask at work and minor complication? Well I suppose technically two separate complications. First off glass mineral glass versus Seiko's Hardlex Glass. Don't know if other companies have their own class or not and a basic class for crystals is probably not the same as window glass it would be more transparent. It becomes obvious if you're looking at a sheet of flat crystal glass versus window glass it's definitely more transparent you can see it when you look at the edges of it window glass looks green. No idea how that changes physical characteristics other than optical. Then we also have thickness like the Seiko five's there crystals are really sick compared to other things and I'm guessing that makes things different. In the first link it talks about Sapphire versus mineral glass. One other thing is bothering me though when I'm reading this is where is the source material? What I mean by this is could we end up with multiple generations of salespeople quoting the same sales tactic or information and we don't actually know because you don't have a source reference? Let me quote something off the website it's brittle oh dear I was sad? Except it's not immune to damage it can crack where shatter under extreme force or impact. So what is the definition of extreme force or impact? Then is that more or less extreme then mineral glass?  Then regarding the price difference while back I had asked the owner where the Sapphire came from and basically wherever he can get the cheapest. So typically ordered from a variety of online supply watch parts in the US and  aliexpress China.. Then yes it does make a difference because we go through a lot of glass crystals and sapphire https://thehorologylab.com/sapphire-crystal-vs-mineral-glass-which-is-best-for-your-watch#google_vignette Then I guess one is glass not glass when it goes by another name? Hardlex Looks like it's purely a Seiko product but now I wonder if other watch companies have their own special glass? I didn't remember from past experience my favorite was people exposed to welding you can find little blobs a metal stuck to the watch case the crystal still intact but there's little burnt holes were bits of metal had actually burnt into the crystal but it was still there. Okay website below starts off with Sapphire sounds good but Apparently it can shatter easier then Hardlex. https://theslenderwrist.com/hardlex-crystal/ One other thing is what I'm reading to websites would be back to I want to see the test results? Often times weren't looking for a subject will find websites where I basically called them these are better than that by the way but sometimes I'll find websites that I will call book review websites were basically the review other websites other material and don't really introduce anything new to the subject. As I said these websites look quite nice which is why I'm giving you a link but where's the test results the definition of extreme how extreme to break a sapphire versus a glass or Hardlex?
