Bought this £4.00. I bought it because I read that Camy Geneve have good movements. This one doesn't reek quality to me, am I wrong?

No Richard, you are quite correct Camy have always been a good quality brand. You do know what you have here though dont know . I'm ever so pleased you only paid 4 quid for it though.

She told me, she had appeased some crazy old bloke.  It most of been you. Hehe. 

 

As for the Camy, yes I know what I have.  I bought it without seeing the movement because it was £4. I wouldn't spend good money without seeing inside.

I don't know whether to service it for the practice or hit it with a hammer.  The case is decent though.

Well it depends. The basic movement is fine, but this looks like the last gasp of the FHF 9X series ( I think it is probably an FHF 97)

Earlier versions were much better engineered, but by the time this variant came out, probably around 1980 the quartz crisis had taken hold, and the engineering was being "en-cheapened" as much as possible.

If you clean and service it, it will probably run reasonably well (assuming it hasn't been previously butchered in the back streets of Mumbai of course).

Is it, or was it ever associated in any way with "Camy"? Probably not, but it does have a certain charm and was, in my opinion worth the not very much you paid for it.

"Swiss Made"? Kinda, sorta, maybe, but with a slightly spicy past.

Interesting coincidence a friend brought me an FHF96N for a service. Running very well (with a bit of beat error of 9ms) despite it was not serviced like probably ever, just by adding a bit of lubrication. Lubricating of the balance jewel is going to be an issue for me though, look at the "shock spring"!  I might need to do it from the "other side". As far as I know he could also put it into the 404 club, he said postage was more that the watch itself.

ps.: its not cleaned and serviced yet, with a full wind it was running ~1,5 days. Going to attempt a service and a beat error correction.

Wow, a genuine Oris. I wouldn't like to try and lift the shock springs either.

Im not so sure that Oris ever used the st96. Oris were dependent up until 1970 when they were sold to asaug. And then became independent again in the early 80s. I have dozens of Oris watches  not one of them has anything but a genuine marked Oris calibre inside. Its extremely unlikely that asaug used another swiss movement in the 12 years that they ran Oris, why would they ? Oris had a decent reputation for in house movements. I think we have another Mumbai here. The st96 is used extensively in India. Lots of them, cheap and easy to work on.

I got this for free with some other watches.  It was free for a very obvious reason.  The dial, hands etc nearly fooled me. Hehe. 

Decent movement, I'll do something with the dial.

Unlikely. Pretty much any "Faulex" will have a fake crown. There is probably a factory in China dedicated solely to making fake Rolex crowns.

Interesting that the Chinese didn't invent the counterfeit Rolex. I have one with a nice ETA 2789 inside.

I like the dial. It looks quite reasonable quality, and may be the original Prim dial, just overprinted with Rolex etc. I would keep it as is, its an interesting conversation piece, and its not as if changing the dial is going to add value to it.

Yes I need to do something with the dial.  I gave it a quick xlean last night hoping the lettering would come of but no.

Prim started off making a copy of the Lip R25 which they called the Prim 52 so far as I can tell.

Picked this up in a lot of 3 total. It was $10 U.S. for all. There was a Bulova 10AX movement that I needed for parts, a Timex Electronic (which I'm working on) and this: a nice little Orient Crystal.  It's a nice, smooth-running automatic with day & date.  Thank heaven it keeps such excellent time, because it is so quiet I can't hear it ticking at all.  I haven't had it on a timegrapher yet but it's been running for a few days now and I can't tell if it's off even by a second.  I will always prefer pocket watches, but this wrist watch can be one of my exceptions.

Do you have any spares rich ?. If reusing the same one you may need to swap the tube out for a better fitting one. Bit of a fiddly job .

Interesting indeed... They've got an automatic full calendar cam actuated chronograph (looks for all the world like a 7750 base, but they claim manufacture, which is pretty common if they so much as polish a screw for themselves these days) for a pretty reasonable price (€4K). At least I assume that's reasonable... I'm not a fan of the 7750, or calendar chronographs, so I don't really track prices of those sorts of things.
