Its been a Sportsmatic 15035 cal 6601A for me this week so far. It suffers a little dial flaking but its still nice and I suppose its not doing bad for something made in October of 1963 and just feels very comfy on the wrist.58b6f216c974a_IMG_07511.thumb.JPG.bb77ffea54d3b01fb89dd9bf77b04df4.JPG

A bit of vintage Russian for me this evening....

Poljot De Luxe 29 jewel auto.

Featuring the lovely Poljot 2415 "Orbita" movement, the thinnest auto movement of its day apart from the micro rotors.

I just finished a full strip down service on this today and am giving it a little test drive. I will probably post the full walk through shortly.

I just finished working on this Seiko Bellmatic project watch .

I received a beat up Bellmatic that had a filthy knicked up case and bracelet , broken pallet fork , broken hairspring , a paperclip holding the band to the case , about a quart of oil in the movement , BUT , nice blue dial and rotating chapter ring .

I bought a working Bellmatic on the bay with no bracelet  , and Poof !! , it morphed into this very nice , properly working project watch .

I have worked on Swiss , Japanese , and other mechanical watches including chronographs .  Accutrons , Hamilton electrics ., and AS 1475 alarm watches that are used by a few different Swiss manufactures , But these Seiko Bellmatics are a bit of a challenge to work on .

I have the Seiko manual in a binder that has the tech sheets for this watch , and the info goes on for page after page .

Off to a family gathering tonight so i thought I'd power up my favourite watch the old Sportsmatic 6601-1990 manufactured May 1965 which makes it a year older than me and it works better and looks better than me too.58b967dbe3d1e_IMG_07641.thumb.JPG.006da10a7b820d9cdba633aa8c7dc585.JPG

I really like this watch with its retro styling "WATER 100M RESIST" Takes me back to the 80s - 90s

Do any of the guy's on the forum know when the styling changed to its present day format 97a0451b64d404dd31bec3a4e455719c.jpg

I'm not sure when the styles changed but I do know that as the Seiko Pogue 6139 - 600x  evolved from the first model , 1969  I believe , the words on the dial changed from "Water70Proof", to "Water70Resist " . to no depth markings .

If you see a watch that says Water Proof on the dial or case back you can be sure it is pre 70's ......... i think that there were some regulation changes that mandated this because most of these watches were not in fact waterproof to depth , but water resistantant for swimming , showering , etc .

Thanks!

The horizon line was released in 1957 and the last model (Lord Elgin Anthony) released in 1960. Elgin developed wrap around crystal technology that fits to the edge of the Bezel, they shared it initially with LIP who called it Panorama and Timex also released some wrap around crystal models a few years later.

The wife is starting to enjoy vintage watches and has the benefit of someone hunting and restoring them.

    • Surely it depends on the clock , I only usually restore torsion clocks and I only use oil on mainspring ( small amount) but on the few so called normal pendulum clocks I have done I have used mainspring grease as there is more reserves of power than there is in a torsion clock so it is not so critical. Dell
    • https://watchguy.co.uk/cgi-bin/files?showfile=Venus/Venus 178.pdf&filename=Venus 178.pdf&dir=Technical Manuals&action=documents   The hour recorder is driven by the barrel and it will only stop if it is held by the hour recorder stop lever 8690. So I would check if this lever (powered by the spring 8691) is really holding the hour recorder in the "chrono off status". I haven't worked on a Venus 178 so far, but on an Omega 861 I chose 9501 grease for the friction spring as it's moving very slow at quite high tension.
    • All I do is use a fine marker (sharpie) to put the service date on the back cover, this way it can be removed with some IPA and does no permanent damage to the watch. I'm in two minds about the whole service marking thing, sometimes it's good/bad to see the markings on the watch case back as you know it's been worked on and vice versa. However, if I took my car in for a service and the mechanic scratched some code into the housing of my engine I wouldn't be too impressed. Hence, I think my sharpie solution is a reasonable compromise.
    • hmmmm.... maybe there is a way to skin that cat 🙀 let me think on it... unless anyone else has any ideas? I left the opening in the side of the base and ring quite large to maybe allow you to grip the crown, but appreciate this may not always be possible, especially for small movements where the crown will not extend past the outer wall of the holder. I noticed this also, but after using the holder for a while I noticed that the ring/holder began to wear into shape (rough edges/bumps worn off) and the size became closer to the desired movement OD. Maybe with some trial and error we could add 0.5 mm (??) to the movement OD to allow for this initial bedding-in?
    • Hi nickelsilver, thanks for the great explanation and the links! I'll take a good look in the article.  Especially this is great news to hear! Looking through forums and youtube videos I was informed to 'fist find a case and then fit a movement for it'. But seems that's not the case for pocket watches at least?  I guess I should be looking to find some 'male square bench keys' for now. I was thinking of winding the mainspring using a screwdriver directly, but I found a thread that you've replied on, saying that it could damage the spring.
