  1. I would call it an amphibia with a komamdirskie dial. It is after all the case that qualifies it as an amphibia. And since it is a 24xx movement current production dials from mother Russia will fit.very cool.

  2. AS1187 powered Mondia. This one runs pretty nicely. About 220 degrees amplitude 10 seconds fast at .7 ms beat error..curiously it is all stainless swiss cased..and has an acceptable beat error. I have noticed that very often cheaply cased AS1187's have pretty large beat errors. Factory seconds maybe.Or hasty off shore assembly.

  5. I would disagree with the location of the spring in the picture above the reason for this is in the picture I have the post circled in green has a wheel that goes there missing in this picture would be helpful if that would go back on its post. Then there's zero space behind the setting lever to put in a spring at all. This is where the protruding post becomes interesting and the circular recess that's level with the spring. So in my version the drawing you can see what I think the spring should go.

  7. Have been buying and selling for 50 years. Only started getting into watches in the last year, buying from thrift stores and online. I like hunting for watches in the wild. Have quite a big backlog of relatively inexpensive watches along with a few nicer ones. Up to now, my watch "repair" has been limited to installing batteries where needed but would like to at least become more knowledgeable, even if I don't attempt the repair myself. This way, if I do go in for a watch repair, I will know what to watch for and the right questions to ask. Not originally from SW Missouri but have been here almost 20 years now. Have lived previously in NY, Virginia, Texas, and Florida.

  8. Hello! I'm from Scotland but am currently living in the US. I got my first high quality watch in the form of an Omega Constellation on a trip to Zurich over a decade ago, and just picked up a Zenith from the 90s. My repair skills are non-existent but I'm hoping to learn from the expertise here in this forum :)

  13. Today's watch is my vintage Vostok Komandirskie. You may recognize it as the exact model Mark featured in his recent YouTube video with the pallet issue. I liked the one he chose so much, I had to get one for myself. I absolutely LOVE the patina on the dial. As Mark mentioned his was a bit of a Frankenwatch, mine is as well. Amphibia case, Komandirskie movement and dial and a no name bracelet that was once two tone gold and stainless but the gold was scrubbed away. I'm still waiting on my scuba dude like the one mark also featured, but that one is taking the slow road from Russia

  17. If anyone out there has ever wondered if a Kif Duofix spring from an Accutron 214 movement will work with a Rolex 2030 the answer is YES. They are exactly the same. I would still be interested to know if one can be used from a Rolex series 1500 movement though.

  19. Hi everyone! I have always loved watches. This past summer, I purchased a quartz watch that needed a new crystal and some cleaning. At the same time, my son busted the crystal on his watch. Both watches needed batteries. I was dumbfounded by the quote, so I researched what it took to do it myself. After a while, my wife final said, "Just get some beginner tools and try it out. It could be a fun hobby." She doesn't know the obsession she started. My youngest son has already joined in! I look forward to getting advice about SO MANY questions I have. Thank you advance!

  21. Wait. I was looking to a set of 6 with a nice stand for 100 pounds. Horotec, roller bearing and SS blades. They are the absolute best according to a known someone that also A*F and Bergeon before, and having handled fora try I agree. That is not crazy expensive. Even better news, my Chinese ones that want to be a bit like the above are cheap and work perfectly. I think one can do very good with a total of 100 ponds/euro/dollars if using a PC based timegrapher. And remember it's the watchmaker that does the good work, not the tool.

  24. At a recent BHI meeting my worst fears were not only confirmed but increased with the news that the company “The Swatchgroup Limited” will no longer be suppling watch parts to supply houses such as Cousins as from 2015. It was also confirmed that its subsidiary company ETA will also be following suit by not supplying movements or movement parts to supply houses. The knock on effect of this throughout the industry should not be underestimated. The worry for all Holologists is companies such as “The Swatchgroup Limited” not only supply watch movements for over 20 makes of watches but also own companies that manufacture rubies, balances wheels, balance springs and they also own “Renata” (battery producer). With some horological supply companies losing as much as 50% of their trade, it is not an exaggeration to say that some may not survive. It is my understanding that only selected watch repair companies who comply to specific standards and have specific test equipment will be supplied with replacement parts. For some well established repair companies this may not seem a huge transition. But as always, exclusivity always carries extra costs and restrictions of trade. For hobbyists watch enthusiasts or even any small watch repair companies who willingly tackle the lower grade of watches they will no longer be able to offer a comprehensive service. Apart from success from surfing the net and scrolling through eBay for used parts, thousands of watches will now be sent to the steampunk scrape heap. The reason for this decision is hard to explain as no official communication to the industry has yet been issued. It certainly is not for financial reasons “the Swatchgroup limited” reported for year 2012-2013 an increase of sales of 8.3% with a net profit of 1.9 billion Swiss francs (£ 1.3 billion). Worldwide sales of watches has also been remarkable with a steady growth since 2009 to 2012. Total sales of watches year 2012 worldwide was worth over $7 billion. The decision may be an attempt to protect the brands through exclusivity. Whatever the reason or reasons for an industry that somehow survived the quartz era of the 70,s and is now in fine health I find it a very strange decision. The most important person being ignored is existing and future customers. For those who have doubts about this and the dangers for the industry have a look at these web sites. http://www.esquire.com/blogs/mens-fashion/best-chinese-watches-072011 or the web site http://www.parniswatch.net Regards Derek Ashenden
