My First Staking Set Advice

Hi, Levine:

 

I could be wrong but my understanding is that there is a piece in the staking kit for punching out the balance staff as well as a piece for re-establishing the rivet once the new staff is in place. I have watched this same procedure done by a couple of different folks on YT and apparently the toughest part is getting the hairspring, et a,l dismounted to remove the broken balance staff.

Time is a craftsman's finest tool, so use as much as you like.

Anybody ever seen a staking set like this?i got it on eBay. But I’ve looked and looked and never seen this sort. It has five kind of long stumps and 15 or 20 long stakes and also about 10 shorter stakes. No makers name anywhere either I noticed that someone has numbered a few and the rest are just plain. Any input is appreciated.

I think K&D is the best staking tool, it has so many functions. Luckily I got a set from a retiree.

In addition, I also record some brands, maybe some mistakes, because they are too much.

Does anyone know if staking sets generally came with a reamer spindle for reaming/broaching holes? I have never seen a 4.7mm reamer spindle which could hold reamers/broaches for jewels.

I have one. I have to be honest I can't remember where it came from and it is totally unmarked so I can't tell you much about it. It has a tapered hole that accepts the Seitz reamers, is 4.7mm diameter, and fits my MKS staking frame perfectly. So they do exist.

That looks very useful. Unfortunately, it seems to be quite hard to find! Especially one that fits the Seitz reamers.

That piece looks like the broach that is part of a set of 4.7mm end mill pivot cutters, like the Bergeon 30007...which Bergeon claims comes with 15 interchangeable pivotal strawberries in hard metal  ...

Exactly that is it. 

B. also sells a 4.7mm broach with 3 small collets for small drills.

Curiously enough I have one of those too....

But....

the "strawberry" cutter (top) doesn't fit the carrier (bottom), and the reamer (bottom) doesn't fit the top carrier; they are not interchangeable.

I also have only 1 cutter as well

... and there is a 3rd type of 4,7mm holder, also from a broaching set. It takes straight shanks and holds them with a screw, like screw driver blades.

The Watchcraft Tri-Duty came with a drilling spindle.  The bits of the Seitz are not compatible with the Watchcraft spindle.  I have one of these.

Yes it was. I do not recall him setting it up on the lathe though.  He had four staking sets and this was one of them.  I set it up on one of my lathes to try it out and it works, but I have never used it on an actual project.

Hey boyos. This is 100 bucks on the bay right now. I saw love for g-boley staking sets in the thread but they usually had numbers and i don't see a number for this one. I'm legit not even sure what you do with a staking set as i'm only doing basic services but i am almost certainly going to horology school at this point and i know it's something i'll need. Vintage Boley from a watchmakers estate. There's stakes missing but i'm assuming you can fill in the gaps as you need to. You guys think should i go for it? It looks in good condition and also like something you could probably club a rock to death with and it would still work fine.

Thats a nice set with the base to reverse the stakes. If its a buy it now then grab it quick. If its up for bids then likely it will 3 x that.

Yikes given the fact i will need a staking set eventually what should my ceiling be on it you think 300 or so?  It is sadly not a buy it now.
EDIT: Bid 200 on it. I see staking sets coming up in random watch repair vids usually involving balance staffs. I should probably start watching vids on them.

Affraid I'm  no expert on staking sets or their value. I have a Star that was mostly complete that came in at a good price of around £80. But i was very very lucky and here in the UK the price is usually higher than USA.The Boley I'm sure is much better quality than mine. If i  personally was looking again and saw a complete set in good condition, i would be wanting to stop at around £300 but I'm also tight.

I got a Chinese set for about $100 and have used it a few times and very happy - so if you don't get the one on eBay this may be an option for you - check out thread Quality Chinese Tools on this forum

Haha. As far as i know the Boley is a good make but maybe not the best. If i was serious about a career in watch repair i would want the best i could get and in a complete condition.  Plenty here that can advice you much better than i can what to buy . Earlier this week i could kick myself for holding back on price with a very complete production lathe. It went for 50 more than my top bid yet i originally planned to go higher than it sold for .  For starters the staking set will replace you a broken balance staff which is a common issue. I dont think there is anything else that can install one.

Used my set for closing up the hole in the barrel bridge where there is too much play in the barrel arbor/bridge. Worked a treat and really improved amplitude. Chronoglide have an excellent video tutorial (look up 'hammertime' on their youtube channel) on the best way to do this with your staking set.
