  1. The pivots on these pocket watches need to have a sharp point. I used to re-point them in my lathe using an arkansas stone with a drop of oil. You need to make sure the cups are good as they wear on the inside and can be very rough. You should be able to get an estimate where to pin by refitting the balance and threading the hairspring so the impulse pin is in the centre of the pallet fork.

  2. I’d almost be inclined to soak the entire movement in penetrating oil for a few weeks... everything has to be torn down and cleaned anyway.

  3. Well, the good news is it’s not a replica. That movement is in really bad shape. Could be a few hundred dollars just in replacement screws! it needs to be torn down and every part carefully cleaned and checked for damage. But I fear there is more bad than good there...

  4. I received a 50’s era watch that was totally dead. After disassembly, cleaning, lubing and reassembly it worked but the amplitude was very low. I was unable to get an amplitude reading with a timegrapher app but I would guess it was about 45 degrees. The BPH measured 30,600 which is high since it should read 18,000 for this movement. Further investigation revealed the balance wheel binding in one direction but I was unable to located the cause. Upon further testing, removing the pallet fork allows the balance wheel to rotate freely in both directions. When the pallet fork is installed without the balance wheel, it moves freely from side to side when lightly prodded. Since both pallet fork and balance wheel operate normally on their own, could it be there is a misalignment of some type between the two?

  6. With some very careful manipulation, time, patience and will - you will achieve a functional hairspring pip Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  8. Hi pip. Your hair spring is really not correct, but that would (should) not stop a pin pallet movement, rather just make it awful at keeping good time. I’ll post an exemplary hair spring profile next - something I so desperately reach out for [emoji3] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  9. I was too initially. Someone mentioned that and it works better. Its a bit fiddly as lume can absorb at different rates, but dip-blow dry- check -repeat can usually get a perfect match. Use daylight only if possible for best match.

  12. Many sellers of watches/pocket watches and clocks would have their name put on the dials. Your watch was definitely imported.

  13. It's described as "watch oil" so should be ok for pocket watches? Might of oiled the pallet fork bearings... :$ Because it's really easy to always blame the watch (or the tools) and in doing so miss something I'm doing. I'm really new to this (2 months) and I know I'm probably still making mistakes. I want to try and find and fix them as quick as I can. That's a good idea. I did buy a good condition working mechanism when I started all this a month or two ago. I was planning just to put it in a case (the one my Ingersoll-Trenton came in) but decided not to (sticking with the original slow running movement). I've put that on Watch-O-Scope | PCTiming Machine | TG software already and it's pretty good (under 10 s/d) the I'll "service" that and see what happens.

  14. @hidavidd Well I guess you know that its not good, and I would suggest you do not move that oscillating weight--more damage. If you consider this a long term project, go ahead and attempt to uncase the movement and very gently try unscrewing the rotor plate and the balance hairspring. I fear that most of the plate screws will break right off if you try to unscrew them, so try putting some penetrating oil onto them first and let it sit for a few days before trying. Its going to be a costly project, and I know just one materials house that sells rolex parts. http://www.startimesupply.com/. J
