  1. Total lock is definitely too heavy. It could be reduced by 25% easy, and that would fix your amplitude. You could probably just move the stones in, but often it's a mix of closing the bankings a moving the stones.

  2. Could be a top crystal. In fact, the example drawing references Orient. https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/domed-top-sternkreuz-xs I wish it was so easy. Unlike Seiko, which to some extent has always published casing parts, Orient did not. And that would just allow to know the P/N, then getting the part itself can turn to be impossible. Moral, when working on watches, treat them as if all parts are unreplaceable. If something does not move, stop there, and think or gather information about the issue before it's too late.

  4. It seems like you could reduce the space for the banking by putting some small pieces of tape on the plate so as to build up the thickness where the fork hits. Not a proper repair, but would let you see what happens easily and non-destructively.

  5. No problem OH. I'm not really fixated about knowing who made it. I found a signed inscription by a repairer from the the same year I was born: cleaned, rebuilt anchor and few parts. That was the first time I looked close and put hands on a strike works and the like, upon superficial inspection it looks pretty good, some tapered pin has been replaced by twisted wire, and the hours (I believe is called) gathering pallet, that is the "anchor" mentioned above, is a bit lose on the square arbor, it appears to have been remade from brass. Master said I should shape a new one from steel, cutting the square hole with a small triangular tool, I'll see what I can do. Then added that I should make a pervasive restauration including aesthetics, something with which I really disagree. Fortunately I was saved by someone coming to the workshop, the husband of her niece proceeded to make brass shims for a door hinge on the lathe and I quickly repacked it and left

  7. In case you don't have spare pallet stones, fine sand paper spread on top of glass works to file this pallet stones to size. I have a 3×3 meter white nylon sheet which I spread on floor to work on.

  10. This looks like an case with an exterior tension ring to hold the crystal on. The flange on the outside edge of the crystal, as in the drawing jdm linked to, should fit outside that raised lip on the case. The ID of the crystal should be sightly smaller than the OD of the case lip. Then the bezel/tension ring fits over the crystal. So the OD of the crystal flange should be about equal to the ID of the tension ring. The flange on the side of the crystal is now sandwiched between the case and tension ring. Without the crystal there, the tension ring is much too loose.

  13. Hairspring itself looks good, if anything last coil is a little bit close to the stud, due to imperfectly centered coil, the whole coil looks a bit pushed to the side which has pushed the last circle close to the stud, if it was me I adjust the coil to push it to exact opposit side, to reduce chances of last coil colliding with the stud. Didn't you examine the lock on this movement before?

  14. Hi All I just purchased one of these pearl cleaning machines from a dealer in India. Be careful of the wiring and I would urge you to inspect the wiring to all components. The wire used in mine was too small a cross sectional area for machine wiring. I have changed the wire for tri-rated panel wiring that has a break down voltage in excess of 600 volt. I noticed the mains lead had cable colours of RED BLACK and GREEN for live neutral and earth. There was no rating data on the outside sheath so I have replaced the mains lead with 1.00mmsq. 3 core flex with Brown Blue and Green/yellow for live neutral and earth. On closer inspection the cables are not routed or fixed just a rats nest. I have slid heat resistant sleeving over the cables and saddled them to the base. The connectors used are also substandard so I fitted a 240 volt rated connector rail similar to that found in boiler junction boxes and terminated all cables properly using boot lace ferules. I also noticed the earth wire was not secured properly with a ring crimp. It was wrapped around a fixing screw and most of the cores had been severed by the screw head. I have fitted a ring crimp to all earth wires and now consider the machine to be safe to use. If anyone wants details on how to get their machine safe please ask.

  16. Well, I still have all my fingers, so I think I'll use them until they don't work anymore. That said, I think if I had a shop and sold a lot of mechanical watches, I would want the ones on display to show the right time. Keeping them all wound could be a chore, and *might* almost make this tool worth its price. Outside of that, some people with plenty of cash may buy it just to have one. I prefer a more personal touch - one that can sense the increasing tension in a spring.
