The Amphibia uses an armoured glass, that is, it has a metal ring on the inside around its circumference. If that ring is missing, it will fit but leak. The fact that you were able to push out the crystal using your fingers only tells me the metal ring was missing. It usually requires a crystal press or a very, very strong thumb and comes with pain in said thumb. Fitting a correct crystal w/o a crystal press is basically impossible. You can see me do it here!

Spot on — I just checked and yep, one of the balance pivots is smashed on one side. That would definitely explain the issue. Appreciate you pointing me in the right direction! -
Yah, the Charles River Museum has a few of those old Waltham factory machines including a screw machine or two they fire up from time to time, though I've never seen it run. I think the American Precision Museum in Vermont has one too....

Need to see the pivots on the balance but my first guess would be one of the pivots.

You're absolutely right — this should’ve been caught earlier if I had tested the train wheels more carefully before fitting the fork and balance. On initial inspection, nothing stood out, but it seems the centre tube shifted when the train bridge was screwed down, which made it harder to spot until later. Anyway, now that’s sorted, I’ve run into another issue: The movement ticks fine in the vertical position (see photo 1), but it stops in the horizontal position (see photo 2). Could anyone point me in the right direction on where exactly I should be checking? I’m also attaching a photo of the balance assembly in case something looks off or unhealthy — please let me know if you notice anything wrong Thanks in advance
