  1. Some of you may have noticed last week, I was struggling with a major update for this forum software. I was getting a lot of errors in the back-end and it was making it very difficult to manage. I rarely do this, but I opened up a support ticket with the developers (Invision) and at first they put the blame on third party plugins, something I knew was complete BS, but I went through the process and eventually we got bumped up to 1st level support after quite a bit of whinging from yours truly. 1st level support immediately saw that it was a bug on their end and we had to wait until today, a minor update has been released by them and I am happy to say that the issue is resolved. What does this mean for the forum - well not a lot but the backend is running more smoothly with no errors. EMOJIS What this does change though is the way this site handles emojis - you know - ? ? etc etc. and mobile users (me included) will particularly appreciate this. Before, this website could not handle mobile standard emojis as keyed into the keyboard of a phone or tablet (or even the emojis in, say, a macbook touch bar). These style emojis are now pretty much standard, but the forum would throw up an error if you tried to post with a standard emoji. I'm happy to say that the database this forum runs on has now been updated to support standard emojis and the old emoticons have now been disabled in their favour. Going forward this will reduce errors when you are posting on mobile devices and any keyboard that is emoji enabled. So - old 'Emoticons' are gone - Emojis have replaced them. And another first world problem is sorted ???

  2. While you have the hairspring removed, I would drop the balance into the movement to see if it fits with reasonable end-shake. Don’t worry about getting the impulse jewel into the lever as it wouldn’t act normally without the spring fitted anyway. Do look at the old spring for reference, even though it’s not exactly the same. Compared to a plain spiral, there are at least two manipulations made: one to decrease the radius of the terminal curve, and one to dog-leg the stud to be closer to the balance rim. The exit angle of the spring from the stud may also be different, and this is most easily adjusted with the spring fitted to the balance cock in my opinion. I’ve no idea how much experience you have of doing this, but try to keep your tools (tweezers or pins for example) upright/perpendicular so that you do not alter the flatness.

  3. I believe there's an old saying if you want it done the right do-it-yourself. Out of curiosity place reset your watch to where they authorized by citizen to work on their watches? PDF is attached page 11 will get you started. Citizan E76.pdf

  4. Have a look at some places where they change batteries. Some are good and able to do that as well.

  5. The plan is good providing you have checked that balance fits in place and impulse jewel interacts with fork as it should. The new balance complete is NOS (according to the seller) so I regards it as poised and at least wouldn't touch its roller, do your number with the hairspring. Good luck.

  6. That sounds like a good plan. It's usually easiest to make the necessary adjustments to the spring with it mounted by itself on the upturned cock. The balance is poised with the roller in place, that is normally as far as poising goes. Very high grade watches might have modified hairspring collets that compensate the small error a normal one may introduce, but even a standard collet is pretty close (they drill for the pin opposite the slot). In more modern times much better collets have been developed that are extremely well poised. All that to say you won't mess up the poise by turning the spring 180 degrees. Turning the roller will affect it though, in some cases it's quite a lot.

  8. So applied some force with a screwdriver and the movement ring popped out! It's covered with some sort of black coating which i'm not sure from what origin. I think it might be protective paint from some sort. Now for the cleaning. Thanks for your help!

  9. If you haven't work on a 66 previously, remember when disassembling it that there's a tiny washer between the 4th wheel and the center wheel bridge. It can be easily forgotten and get lost in the ultrasonic or in the cleaning process.

  10. Thanks for the responses. I took all apart, installed just the third wheel and train bridge - it looks and feels like it's as it should be. Thanks for the details Nucejoe, this is all a bit of a learning curve. I'll take it apart again and try that sequence watchweasol, see what it looks like. I've got my best technician checking it for me now as you can see in the photo, will see what she says

  12. To clarify a bit, It seems from what I hear, rodico is so effective that it has allowed watchmakers to cut corners at various steps. Examples are oiling; if you get a mini drop on the periphery of the jewel, careful rodico can correct it rather than cleaning up the whole jewel and reapply. Also not using the finger cots that someone mentioned here already, doable because at the end you could remove the marks with... rodico! So, my interpretation is that there is really nothing against it other than people getting into bad habits. It’s true, if Rolex or Omega don’t allow it, it’s so that in principle you will take all actions and precautions not to need it in the first place. Cheers! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. In my experience it leaves a residue when used to dab away fingerprints/smudges on plates, best to use fingercots and save the hassle. I just use it to remove balance jewels prior to cleaning,
