Sometimes you are the windshield! I have been anticipating this lot coming in. No pictures of the movement, but the dial looked good. When it arrived, it was better that I could have imagined! Only missing the seconds  hand, winding stem and crown. But everything else original. I opened the back and was not disappointed...ETA 1256. According the Ranftt, first ETA automatic (Etarotor). As I gazed in wide wonder, I used a piece of pegwood to move the rotor from covering the balance. It was beating and strong!! It stopped shortly after but got it to go again.  Hopefully a servicing will be all this needs...

A bit of history as well, when they stamp the now common knowledge of removing the 3 A screws to remove the automatic module, before they called it a module!!

I just finished another Seiko 6309 diver over the weekend and finished it off last night, see before and after shots

Front:

Tape was the only thing holding it together, here is the back of the case:

And here is the view when I opened the case :

And when I got the movement out:

The hands were completely fused to the cannon pinion and the dial paint eaten through to bare metal 

After cleaning in my 'home-brew' 566 and rinse solutions (please see my other thread, HERE) and then polishing the glass and case, then replacing the dial and hands with aftermarket replacements and a new cannon pinion from a donor watch along with a new bezel (because I had a spare so why not), here is the final result:

Just spotted an issue with this watch - looks like the day (not date which is working fine) is not jumping correctly and ends up misaligned after midnight - on manual change there is no 'snap' into place of the day either, so I assume it is misaligned of the spring is not engaging correctly on the day disc??? So near and yet so far 

Will open the watch up and try to fix it... stay tuned

Another Croton automatic ETA 1256 in beautiful shape. Runs well added a temporary strap and pegged most of the DNA off the case. Crystal has a Crack but that is not the original one as this movement was only produced for 5 years ('50 to '54). The dial is pretty awesome. I like the tick marks between the minute makers. 5 minutes on the timegrapher got it close, but this will be a future project to see what kind of amplitude we can reach, clean the case and replace the crystal.

Just picked up this very cool Oberon jump hour from a seller in Bulgaria. It sets, but doesn't run or wind. Looks like a 21-jewel pin pallet movement from the eBay pictures. It just arrived at my work so I haven't opened it yet.

Picked up this Croton Tropartic with the blue dial yesterday. I posted it in the blue dial thread. Since then I took it out of the case and examined more closely. I now think that the gold flecking on the blue linen dial is original...it does not affect the white of the minutes/seconds markers, which actually are on top of some of the gold. Anyway several more pictures in various lighting trying to show the nice contrast between the red seconds hand and the blue dial. I dont think this had been opened in quite a while as the case back was really tightened down and gasket was hardened but easy to chip out compared to the goo of the crown gasket. Definately will be getting a new crystal.

1970 Golden Clipper 'J'

This Croton Aquadatic has an ETA 1258 that was only manufactured from '53 to '55. Paired with a Speidel with a patent date of 1952, I think the wavy lines of the links and curve of the spring bar covers are a perfect match. The case back screws and the profile of this watch are beautiful! Has a case back gasket of an unusual shape with holes for the screws, tough to get a replacement I would think. Looks good on a Hamilton alligator grain over calf as well, but somehow I like the flex bracelet a tad more at the moment. The dial has a few spots but over has a nice patina as well.

Thought I would give this one some wrist time today

Here is my watch of today - I made it myself from all new parts, I think I may switch out the hands to ones with white lume as the plain silver doesn't show up very well at night (see below and tell me what you think), ie the black polish on the hands is black most of the time (see minute hand below) unless it catches the light and turns white (see hour hand in picture below) which is the only time you can see it on the busy backdrop of the dark skeleton movement. 

 

It's a Seiko NH72A skeleton movement and an 'Ali Express special' strap/case, here are the hands I am thinking of switching to with white lume and red seconds hand.....opinions:

...are you bored of my Crickets yet?  One more today. This one was in rough shape with many missing parts. I bought a donor and debated about which watch should be the runner but here it is. Maybe not my best work but when I snapped it closed the beat was less than 1.5, a few seconds fast DU/DD and for an unadjusted cal 120 the positions were all pretty close though the nine o'clock is a bit heavy. It just didn't seem worthwhile to wrestle with it. I also discovered the alarm is much louder than usual. Perhaps something to do with the friction fit membrane gong plate instead of the typical case screw/gong plate set up. Haven't seen that before...
