Locked escape wheel.

This just in...

I found that when I tweaked the escape wheel with a pin, it freed itself from the pallet, so although the upper jewel in the wheel bridge looked okay, on closer inspection it seemed to move, and when I pushed gently on it, it virtually crumbled and fell out.

I think the jewel is 1.1mm dia and have found one in another watch in my spares box, so since I have nothing to lose really I am going to try to replace the jewel. I don't have the right tools so I will work out a safe way to perform the job. Wish me luck!

The back-up plan will be to find another wheel train bridge. Yours in trepidation,

Latest on the Vostok 2414: have found a jewel in my spares box, managed to remove it from bridge and have fitted it into the wheel train bridge of the Vostok and it looks pretty good. Going to have a well-earned beer and see if it will run when I refit the bridge tomorrow! I'll have to check for end shake. I really think my Vostok will live again.

After all this was a jewel damaged as you have replaced one?

I see old hippy,s point one of the pallet stones does not look to be seated correctly. If so it will never escape.

If it does not work with either the new or old escape wheel then this is the fault. To adjust the stone position you will need a pallet folk tool, heat & shellac. A pic below is the tool I use.

The story so far:

Since I don't have the facilities for resetting the pallet stone, I risked sanding a few 'thou' off the stone using 1500 grade paper (the Tamiya stuff I use for models). I managed to do this without disturbing the pallet stone, and hooray, the escape wheel advances as it should with a few winds on the mainspring. With the balance fitted, it really wants to go, but I think the beat corrector is not set correctly. So now I will do a little research on this. I am convinced this watch will go, it just takes perseverance. (Quite easy with the rain beating down outside!)

This is probably a first Frank,  I wait with interest to hear how good the end result is.

Best of luck Frank you have identified the fault but I will be most surprised if the sanding down method will work as the tolerances are fine to say the least. If it was me I would find another pallet unit & fit.

I can't believe this. Why not just order another pair of pallets, you are making a lot of work for yourself  fjseal.

No harm in trying something when the thing isn't working anyway and not of big value. One can just learn. Curious to know how this will continue.
