Waltham Pocket Watch Challenge

Hey jdrichard,

PocketWatchDatabase suggests that it is a 18s, model 1883.  I can't promise anything but I think I've got some odd 1883 plates and bits.  I printed out the database page and saved the picture.  I'll take a look this weekend.

Thank you very much. That gear is going to be tough to find

Picked up a Beautiful Waltham PW with a few problem: 2 Cracked Jewels and one loose Jewel, plus missing teeth on a keyless gear.36788911f65a8780f722a336636852b6.jpg821ca39c713ae10db667bfca861601d6.jpg483cabe2fc0cce87a4fe38cb6b21bf53.jpg9140bc9a8687460806b4ca999e248bdc.jpg14fec1cdf5dc5a84a7c55083de12d55a.jpg33e6c8e71a705c080467ec1821d5fc2b.jpg

good show,  super dial.    i think that dial will fit on many Walthum mvt.s, that will fit into many cases.    im not a "pureist" -- what ever works - and might look good.     vin

It took  some time but after discounting several with to many teeth, I  found the one sitting off to the left.  I believe this is an 1883 but please, don't think it's N.O.S.  If you can measure yours we talk.  This one is 3.9mm across opposite teeth and 1.1mm thick.

No problem, it gave me the incentive to go through one of my piles of random.  Gust glad you have one.

Organizations helps move things farther from being liability and closer to being asset.  Only problem is, it's hard to find.

That gear would be very tricky to make on a lathe for sure. The teeth would be a challenge.

That is a lot of stuff. I have mine relatively organized and you can never have too much.

Hey jdrichard,

How did you make out fixing your plate?  If you run into an irreparable snag, let me know, I probably have an odd "brass" plate kicking around here.  I wouldn't want to dig it out unless you had the need.

I did bend the peg back into place and the watch now works like a charm. Timed perfectly. Big thanks for your offer. Next time for sure.

    • one of the problems we have is visible versus invisible. For instance millennium disulfide another high pressure lubricant black in color. I was told by somebody worked for the Boeing company that they had a piston like device somewhere that has eight call it around it to grab it so it has to slide and in the collet has to grab. But if somebody puts that type of dry grease on where grease with that in it it embeds itself basically in the metal and they have to throw the whole part away they get use it all. So I suspect on all the dry powdery lubricants that they will go into all the basically microscopic cracks and crannies of the metaland that's where it is visually at least until you scrub it off your visually going to see it which is good because you want your lubrication the stay word is. But I'm sure it doesn't last forever on the metal it's just a really nice lubrication
    • Thanks for the info. I can't seem to find tech sheets for those either.  I'll muddle my way though 🙂
