Hello all! I'm trying to open another can of worms!

 

Mark did a service on a mechanical IWC:

 

Not related to that, I have been searching recently for a cheap chinese copy of 6498/6497 (don't ask me why, I'm not not exactly sure) and I stumbled upon:

What do you think about that? I mean it is 50 times cheaper (wild guess) and I suppose for some, it is 100 times uglier (ot other word of their choice).

 

But do you think it runs 50 times worse? For 100$ I will take the chance!

be sure that if I buy it, I will make a more in-depth review of the movement, or at least with more pictures.

Hi Bogdan - some time ago I made up my own watch - 6497 movement - from parts all bought from Hong Kong. Cost me around £100 in all. The movement was a Chinese 6497 which cost about £45. Now, it's obviously not as finished or perhaps as precise as the ETA 6497 I have in my Hamilton Khaki, but it's pretty damned good for £45 - and, so far, it's keeping excellent time when wound. So, if the price is right - take a punt on it. Here's mine:

I know Will, it was around the time I asked you for more details about your purchase that I started studying for a chinese manual 16 lignes movement with a small second.

If you like it, then get it! If it happens to please or impress others then that is a bonus.

I have two high quality watches with Chinese movements, they are not trying to be copies of high end Swiss watches and excellent watches in their own right. Both of them keep time as well if not better than the top end Swiss movements I own.

it's a start but you can get some swiss watches with good movements off ebay if you're patient and do your homework.

 

 

Ebay also has the brand you posted, usually cheaper than USD100 with free shipping.

Which are those two quality chinese movements, if I may ask?

Hi Bogdan, here are some photos of my Chinese powered watches.

The first is a Tourbillon fitted with a Liaoning movement, this is the same movement as fitted to the BHI 150 anniversary watch. Please note, protective plastic is still on the back hence the slight blemish in the middle.

Finally a china tourbillon owner. Please do a review!

I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in a down-to-earth price tourbillon!

...if it's not to much trouble...

When the swatch company imposes it,s no parts to the general trade next year we will all eventually have to use parts and movements from china away.

Sad, but a we are powerless to do anything about it.

Nice looking movements Geo, that BWC looks pretty complicated !

Thank you. Picture doesn't do the BWC justice, the finish is really excellent.

How did they change the law RE car parts? Surely the same anti-competition law can be applied???

I used ebay to get some of these. So I ended up with a chinese 6497 clone and a swiss 6498 as per this link:

I believe both are very reliable...for now.

Most of the major car manufacturers have plants within the EU and are ruled by free trade agreements. Smersh Spectre Swatch are Swiss and not part of the EU. Possibly they have deluded themselves into thinking that this is a cunning plan to combat the increasing threat from China, but I suspect it will end up like the Quartz revolution again.

      Depends what sizes of watches you mostly service . If you were to say pocket watches then you might benefit by wholly replacing the 9010 for 9020. As a rough guide hp500 is twice the viscosity of 9020 which is twice the viscosity of 9010 at 20°c.  So hp500 would give you a more mid-range oil between thin 9010 and HP1300, but as it happens hp750 is more mid- range than hp500, but is that more or less useful when oiling a train of wheels. After the barrel arbor the jump down in pivot size is around half, then after the centre wheel maybe more than half until the escapement. And pivot size isn't especially a deciding factor, as the torque and speed of a pivot would be more relevant when thinking about which oil to choose. So 750 might only be useful on a centre wheel and nothing else, and 500 might be better than 1300 for oiling the centre wheel but still comprises the rest of the train, where 9020 would be ok for the train but too thin for the centre wheel, leaving only 1300 for the oiling of it. You see the problem we're having here. What can be ok for one thing is less ok for another in a different way, damping down power compared to oil spread.  Maybe mixing a drop from two opposite range viscosity synthetic oils will give you some approximate thickness oil in-between . You want a short answer now,  I tnink I'd go with the 9020. Now be prepared for a whole host of different answers.

      @SteveF ,  Go on to Dr ranfft website,  Enter keywords Omega 26.5T3  ranfft .  There Dr ranfft  has listed all related calibers to this family, all which beat the same frequency,  any balance complete of this family fit your watch. This would only expenad your choice of balance complete.  Recolleting your hairspring is easy, but matching it with a balance of the family is challanging. Regs

      Yes, it looks much better, but at this point the main thing is to make the spring in one plain. so picture from side will show this better. Now it is seen that #1 bending is needed, which is normal.
