Hi folks and Happy New Year!

Does anyone have any ideas in how to prevent surface rust from forming on stakes or even the staking anvil dye table? I have a really nice Marshall set as well as K&D. Both fully complete and in excellent shape but the stakes (especially) quickly develop rust. EvapoRust helps... for 2 weeks or so. Same goes for my octagonal anvil. Is there a trick to keep these things rust free? I’m sure when they were new, the original owners didn’t have this problem for some time.

Hi  you can use moisture absorbents such a silica gel crystals often found in small packets when you buy power tools etc, they are available on the ebay in manydifferent  containers  Isuspect you would require the small dessicant sachet's to put in the box with the staking tools.

Apply a thin film of oil with a rug all over, place a silica-gel bag in the case, store in heated, low humidity environment.

Of course! Silica! And how many of those have I thrown  out over the years. Thank you jdm! And after I apply a thin layer of oil, wipe off with clean rag I assume?

Just put few drops on a clean cloth or kitchen paper, rub all over parts to be protected.

I have what me chancel fitters were calling 'rusty hands' when I was an apprentice. I could leave handprints on anything steel. By the next day, there would be a rusty handprint where I had last touched something made of steel.

When I cleaned up on a lather after working on it, I would have to coat everything in oil as well as my hands. If I didn't, the next day I would be back there cleaning off handprints.

So it is not just air with me, but what I touch as well.

Thanks everyone for the replies and excellent tips! Off to raid my wife’s shoe boxes for silica packs and drain some Motul from her Pathfinder. What? You didn’t think I’d use the oil from my car did you?😝

I've been using jojoba oil for years in a hand tool woodworking paradigm (same problem, different scale). I made up a little sapele box with a reversible lid. One side of the lid is just french polished, the other side has a small piece of shearling leather glued to it (hide glue for what it's worth). Jojoba oil lives inside, and when I'm done with whatever tool, I drag it across the lightly oiled shearling, and then it goes to its home. The fatty acids that make up the triglyceride that is Jojoba oil are fairly long chain, and fairly saturated (as far as natural oils go), so it doesn't evaporate or go rancid very quickly.

An (old) toolmaker-turned-watchmaker friend told me they would put a piece of camphor in their toolboxes to prevent rust. He recommended it for staking tools in particular. Used to be moth balls were an easy source of a piece of camphor, but they are made from other stuff now.

 

If you live in a place with the right humidity conditions to promote rust almost no amount of oiling and silica gel will really work longterm. If you have climate controlled work area you can talk to an AC expert to find the right way to maintain your temperature to prevent condensation- not talking wet window level- microscopic condensation which is what causes the light rust on tools. When I was teaching in southern Ohio we were constantly battling rust on all the tools; the front office didn't want us messing with the AC settings so we never got to figure out the "sweet spot" and just lived with it. Very luckily the region I live in in Switzerland has the sort of magic humidity level and rust is only an issue when someone with rusty hands (as above) handles something.

I struggle with this issue a lot as well. Even simple household items rust very easily for me if they aren't good quality steel.

Colored silica gel are great. But they expire really quickly if the toolbox or storage container isn't airtight. In my case in just a matter of days, color changes from orange to dark green. If you buy in large batches and didn't store them properly, be prepared for a shock when the whole batch expires. Sometimes, they even arrive in the mail already expired, and if you got the non-colored version then there is no way for you to find out. Its a borderline scam.

Also, I don't recommend the oven/microwave method to recharge these, as you really don't know the quality control of these little balls. For all we know they could very well be tainted with uranium or cyanide. Or whatever.

So to really solve this problem, I use two things together:
1) An airtight drybox: I find the best are the ones camera enthusiasts use, they even come with hygrometers (shows humidity levels). I like the cheap Nakabayashi ones: https://www.nakabayashi-global.com/products-all/capaty-dry-box
2) "Branded" rechargeable silica gels: Eg. https://www.eva-dry.com/product/e-333-renewable-mini-dehumidifier-2-pack. Pop this in the box along with your tools, close the lid and watch the hygrometer go down. If it doesn't, then just recharge it.

I agree with @Zero. Rust is a serious problem here in the tropics, where the temperature and relative humidity is really high (30 degrees celcius, 80% RH).

I store my more expensive tools in an air tight food container box (volume of over 10 liters), along with a CaCl2 dehumidifier. To be safe from leakage, the CaCl2 dehumidifier is placed in a separate plastic dish (IMPORTANT! I use two to be EXTRA safe), while the tools are kept in an uncovered plastic tray, both inside the sealed food container. I monitor the relative humidity inside with a blue tooth digital hygrometer.

The relative humidity inside the container is around 20%. However, you should replace the CaCl2 dehumidifier when you see some liquid (CaCl2 solution) at the bottom; in a sealed container it should last at least a few weeks, but depends how often you open it. I don’t recommend refilling the CaCl2 dehumidifiers, since leakage will destroy your tools.

The CaCl2 dehumidifiers are quite cheap, but you MUST remember to replace them, if not you will have very serious issues with corrosion from leakage of CaCl2 solution.

Great minds at work here. That's what I did with nine. Open a test throw the silica gel pack in the box with my staking set and jeweling tools.

I learned from @oldhippy that there is a thing called Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) paper. Sometimes tools come wrapped with this brown paper that feels a bit damp. Well, it seems that a piece of this paper in the tool box will prevent rust of everything in it.

Silica gel packs in bags of 100s are available on Amazon for very little cost, see example below. I use them with any watches I get, I put the watch in a small ziplock type bag 5cm x 5cm and throw in a gel pack to avoid any moisture damage until I get around to working on the watch. I also use lock and lock type containers for my infrequently used hand tools and spares etc, again throwing in a few gel packs in the bottom of the container for cheap insurance.

For removing rust from things like staking tools I find WD40 does a great job and is also a water dispersant (the WD in WD40) so protects against new rust at the same time.

    • After another long hiatus (while waiting for truing calipers to arrive), I’ve made some more progress. TRUING IN THE FLAT I was able to use the calipers I purchased to true the wheel in the flat. There’s still a very slight eccentricity in the round, but I’m going to leave it as is. It doesn’t wobble any more and I’m happy with that. Thanks for the tool recommendation @mbwatch. It worked well, though I must say it takes a delicate touch to get the balance between the calipers. Also, my calipers effectively have four different variations based on the orientation of the arms (2 sides, 2 orientations each). Some are more tapered than others, though to what end, I can’t quite tell. My first thought was that flipping them over yields arms that can be used for poising. They are K&D horizontal calipers, btw. OSCILLATION TEST @nevenbekriev @JohnR725 After truing the wheel in the flat, I carefully remounted the hairspring and did your oscillation test. Balance wheel mounted to balance cock, no pallet fork, rotate balance wheel 180 degrees, let it go, and time+count the oscillations. Results as follows for dial down orientation: Duration: 1m 15sec (to full stop) # of oscillations: About 125, though the amplitude of the oscillations decreased significantly, as one might expect I should redo the test in at least two other orientations…Forgot to do that. 🙂  In general, it’s safe to say this watch has a pretty low amplitude, likely for a variety of reasons. I haven’t oiled the balance jewels FWIW…I should probably do that, but I really don’t want to keep disassembling and reassembling the balance. Is it possible to oil those jewels (top and bottom) by just removing the capstones and putting in a tiny amount of oil, with balance in place? I can see how having the pivot in the jewel hole could change how capillary action works, and thus might pull more oil in than desired. However, those capillary forces will be in effect anyway once the balance is inserted. PRACTICE MOVEMENTS @JohnR725 I agree with your sentiment about using practice movements wholeheartedly, and I’ve done that to some degree. The watch I’m currently repairing is for a friend, and she was willing to have me treat it as a “learn-by-doing experience.” With that said,, I probably should have purchased a few more “beaters” before getting to something where I don’t want to muck things up. I’ve still got a couple of those on the bench that I used as donors, and I’ll try to rehabilitate them.
    • Hi, this is the first place I found when looking for advice so I hope someone could advise me.  Im completely new to touching watches but I’ve always wondered how they work.  I’ve bought a cheap movement, an ETA replica to take apart and rebuild.  Im thinking I’ll need some screwdrivers, tweezers, movement holder and a loop? My goal is just to have a go first and see if I enjoy it enough before buying more tools.  Do I buy cheap tools for now and get better quality tools later if I enjoy it like I think I will? or will the cheap tools be a pain and take some of the fun out of it?  With quality tools being relatively expensive I’m unsure what to buy.    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    • Yeah I have seen 44-56 documented for Elgin 18 size elsewhere. I have the style of gauge that's like a set of feeler gauges and I never noticed before today it is faintly stamped "Elgin". Pictured is the way I have been measuring. I am going to go to a larger jewel than the 42 that had been in there. I recently won an auction on a big set of Fitrite jewels all in the little bottles, to discover that the what's actually in the bottles bears no relation to the chart of sizes printed on the box. In most cases it seems to be all mixed so in fact I have about 24 little bottles and thousands of assorted jewels of all diameters and lengths, which is better than nothing. But since I don't have a micrometer with a table, measuring for the exact diameter will be a big job. Instead I will test a lot of them in the fork slot the same way I measure with the gauge. But this is still the next thing. I have to get the escapement to unlock first.
    • it would be nice to have the exact model of the watch the or a picture so we can see exactly what you're talking about. this is because the definition of Swiss watch could be a variety of things and it be helpful if we could see exactly the watch your dealing with then in professional watch repair at least some professionals they do pre-cleaned watches. In other words the hands and dial come off and the entire movement assembled goes through a cleaning machine sometimes I think a shorter bath perhaps so everything is nice and clean for disassembly makes it easier to look for problems. Then other professionals don't like pre-cleaning because it basically obliterates the scene of the crime. Especially when dealing with vintage watches where you're looking for metal filings and problems that may visually go away with cleaning. Then usually super sticky lubrication isn't really a problem for disassembly and typically shouldn't be a problem on a pallet fork bridge because there shouldn't be any lubrication on the bridge at all as you typically do not oil the pallet fork pivots.
