Hi

I have had this old watch for ages, it runs but timekeeping is erratic. I decided to take a look at last. I was just having a close look before proceeding, I noticed that it looks as if the hairspring is not sitting correctly in the adjuster. It looks to me as if the second coil and not the first is in the slot. I just wondered if anyone could confirm I am right before I do anything further. I’ve not removed the balance yet and the pictures aren’t the best but I think you should be able to spot what I mean. Cheers folks.

It is the first coil, it is just over the second coil as it takes its first turn.

You mean it is the first coil in the regulator, but the second coil has somehow overlapped the first and got caught up on the boot? It doesn't look like that to me (all the other coils are too eveny spaced), but If so it can be tickled free with a fine brush or a clean oiler.

Yes, I'll just take the balance out. Can't see properly and it will have to come out anyway regardless. I'll come back with another picture and whatever I discover. Thanks for your replies.

Finally an update on what I found. It turned out that there were no coils at all in the regulator. I did manage to get the first coil in but it was so hard to see. The arm of the balance was right over the top of the part that opens up. It was a bit tense, I really couldn’t see properly and was afraid of doing damage. More magnification would have helped, bit short of lamp oil nowadays. Anyway, after putting the balance back in the watch ran, then stopped, then ran again but gained time. It seems to have settled down now and is gaining about a minute a day. Is it normal for things to take a little while to settle down after messing with the hairspring etc?  I’ll wear it for a while and see how it behaves. I did manage a picture, I know you like pictures 😁

Hello Davy  good pic as you noticed the soring is not sitting in the regulator.    Just wear it and check its progress in the real world and then regulate accordingly              cheers.
