  1. Since I have a restless brain I today decided it was time to practice on an ETA2824-2 Movement. I pulled the practice 2824-2 movements box out and blindly picked a specimen. But soon I realized the pictures probably are so many it would be hard to upload. So I made it to a two part PDF series instead. Part 1 2824-2 Disassemble.pdf Part 2 2824-2 Assemble.pdf

  2. http://www.outils-star.ch/index.html Of course as usual for Swiss websites, very little info, no prices. I remember when Horia updated their site and put prices, it was amazing.

  6. Thanks for the advice, I'll research into it a bit. I love talking to the veterans of the industry. A bit of a story, I was at a train museum with a girlfriend, she was studying EE at the time. An older gent dressed in full conductor garb comes over to talk about the steam engine. He asks us what we do/ study and she says EE, I say CE, so he jokingly starts talking only to her, asking her to explain it to me. He then asked about what kind of stuff we work on, so I start explaining in simple terms and he leans in and says "at what point do I tell him I helped designed the early IBM mainframes" Damn was I embarrassed but I was very humbled. A lot has changed but not nearly enough that old and young can't find things to talk about. Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk

  7. I went to school for computer engineering so i'm not too afraid of an electronics project, I wish radio shack was still around as I'm pretty impatient with waiting for parts. From what I understand, it's just a coil producing a magnetic field and you slowly pull the watch away to demagnetize. It's been a little while since I did any EM calculations but it'd be a fun side project. Also, the way I see it, the field needs some young blood to keep these time pieces going. I hope I can learn a lot from the more experienced folks. Sent from my SHIELD Tablet K1 using Tapatalk

  8. A quick back of the envelope calculation suggests the LED is drawing about 3mA, so it wont be very bright, but by the same token the resistor is operating at a reasonably safe level, assuming it to be 1/2 Watt. If as may well be the case, it is a 1/4 Watt, then don't hold the button too long (not more than perhaps 30 seconds max, which is all you need anyway), or the resistor will get pretty hot and if repeatedly stressed like this, eventually fail. If the resistor fails (it would generally blow open circuit), it is no big deal, the unit will still operate, but the light wont work. If the resistor fails, or starts to look a little cooked over time, swap it out for a 1W 100 k Ohm replacement. Oh, and perhaps rather obviously, don't operate it with the back cover off, as all of that wiring and soldering is live at mains voltage.

  9. I've been following this thread and found it mostly interesting.Low amplitude can be caused by several things but if it isn't that a pivot that broke of they mostly have one thing in common, friction. To have an genuine understanding in what is happening in the escapement and what could cause the low amplitude one have to understand the function of it. So I always urge people to go the long way and get a thorough understanding in what is happening in the area you are fault finding . Sometimes one gets lucky and it is just a easy fix with cleaning and correct lubrication, another time it's crocked banking pins or loose/damage pallets. About oiling the pallets I never used to do it until I watched one of Marks videos where he showed how to put a small amount of oil on the pallets face, run the escapement for a couple of turns and after that removing the pallet fork and cleaning of the excess oil from it and after that putting it back again. This method works like a charm for me. I put a small PDF together so the less gifted like me can follow the discussion in this thread and maybe get a better understanding of what Nickelsilver and the boys/girls are talking about.
