Very Large Pocket Watch

I  was asked to look at this very large pocket watch because although serviced a few years ago had stopped running. It was immediately apparent to me why it was not running. Apart from the glass falling out when I opened the front of the case the hour hand was so badly bent it had hooked itself around the subsidiary seconds hand. 

Once unhooked the watch ran but now the hour hand was free wheeling. On closer inspection the hour hand was really badly bent, pitted and the part that attaches it to the cannon pinion (which was also usual as it has a horse shoe shape) had been bent too wide.  Both hands were also had a fair amount of rust. 

I straightened and re-shaped as best as possible and polished them with diamantine powder. Then I had to re-blue the hands. To get a nice even blue I found really difficult because I could not remove all of the pitting & could not get the hands perfectly straight. Also being aware if I broke anything it would be very difficult to find replacement parts so I did the best job possible. I found the best results was by putting the hands in a tray of sand and heating over the gas stove and once blued dropping them into some machine oil. Not a perfect even finish but still I think a fair result. 
The reason the hands were so badly damaged is because the customer was opening the front of the watch and moving the hands with his finger. I have explained to the guy that this is a pin set watch & the pin in the top of the watch should be depressed to adjust.
 
I have done a lot of research but with no ID  marks I could not find the identity of this watch or in fact any pocket watch that was 25 ligne. Perhaps Willfly might have an idea. The customer said it was his grandfathers who worked on the railway so it might be a railway watch. I have attached a few pics (sorry about the quality) for your inspection.

Nice job - not a railway watch - more correctly, not a railroad grade watch, which required:

  • 17 jewels at least
  • lever setting
  • adjusted for 5 or 6 positions
  • adjusted for isochronism
  • double roller balance
  • size 16s or 18s

Still a nice watch!

    • The 6 watches went today for $70 + $10.75 postage. Not me. Thinking about it, I just need to get myself going with what I have which is enough for now. Still have to get the workshop finished. First things first. It was hard to not bid though. I doubt I would have gone that high. Would have worked out to just over $13 per watch which is outside your club rules anyway.
    • Thanks for the thoughts. I didn't think the hairspring per se was the problem: 18000bph is by far the most common rate, it looks nice and evenly coiled and even fitting a new unused platform gives the same result. All the teeth on the wheels, including the contrate, are fine - so there's no skipping. A tooth count may solve it: Wheel          teeth          leaves Centre         64 Interm         80               12 3rd              64                8 contrate     70               10 scape         15                 8 This indicates a required beat of 16800bph which is a rate I've never encountered before but might be common to some watches (about which I know little). So despite the hairspring looking perfect visually, it should be longer. It's anchored at the very end so I can't do much about that. I will try adding a couple of balance screws to slow it down as unless other members have a better idea, the only other option would be to cut and mount a new contrate wheel with 75 teeth - a bit odd !

    • I agree with @Waggy, no need to adjust. That looks very good to me. The factory specs for 7S26 are something like -35 to +45s/day, but they are usually better. The amplitude is good. When wearing, the most important positions are dial up, crown down and crown left. You need to regulate so that these positions average out to about zero. Crown down is showing +14, so you may have to set dial up to slightly minus s/day. The absolute values of +/-s/day don't really matter, as long as they aren't too far out. The only way to get good accuracy is to wear it for a couple of days, recording the errors, and gradually tweaking.
