Thanks, Cousins also does have Hermle barrels. It might be the case that it is compatible with the Schatz barrel. Looking into that tonight. Getting the bushings from Cousins is also easy.

In the meantime I try to use the bell barrel for the clock to see if it makes a difference.

Before you go buy bushes or make them check the pivots to see if they are worn, if they are you will need to fix them first and them measure the diameter of the repaired pivots to make sure you don't end up with bushes that have a too large pivot hole.

I just mounted the bell barrel wheel instead of the regular (worn) barrel wheel. The clock does still not start. I cannot really believe that the play in the pivot hole is responsible for that. 

Do you suggest that inserting bushes would help?

They certainly can cause a clock not to run. With worn bushes the wheel gears do not mesh correctly either too shallow or too deep. If not sure remove the barrel and just have the wheels installed and see if they spin freely.  I follow this guy a lot.  See how he re-bushes. You will not have the customised tools he has but he explains really well the techniques required to fit a bushing successfully.

I watched this video a few day ago, most of how he goes about the work is wrong, for starters you do not re-bush from the outside of the plate, you re-bush from inside, if you use the correct reamer it will automatically  find the center of the whole. To be fair to him I don't think he was well when he made this video, he is about to say rat tailed file and changes it to small file. He also says we are on the inside of the plate, we always put the bushing in from the inside of the plate, he is putting the bush in from the out side of the plate which is wrong, a bush has a slight taper, doing it his way the bush could easily work its way out of the plate. He calls the bush a broach, a broach is another name for a reamer, The way he pushes the bush in is the wrong way round he is pushing in the bush by the thickest end not the thinnest,  the proud of the bush should be on the outside and is taken down to form the  oil sink. After he has used the burr, he says we have got our oil sink, but its on the inside of the plate. He even tests the wheel to the new fitted bush from the wrong side of the plate. He starts to hand broach it from the wrong side, you do not broach from both sides, The pivot runs on the complete pivot, not on the high spot in the middle as he says, if it has a high spot it is barrel shaped and needs turning down,  A very very bad video indeed.:pulling-hair-out:

Thank you all. I lost faith in repairing the clock. It could as well be the case that there is more to repair. So I stop here, assemble the few parts I disassembled and sell it. In Germany we have a saying: don't throw good money after bad. I rather concentrate on more rewarding projects.

there is a lot of mistakes made re bushing a clock plate. i have a few clock that were bushed wrong and do not keep running.  i suspect that an elongated hole was not "re located properly" ,but, back to the spring barrel.   that double strike ships clock requires a  good deal of power from that spring barrel.  i think the spring barrel is the first thing to correct..

Wish I had not put the vid up now.!!!!!!!  The point I was trying to show was the importance of getting the hole for the new bushing in the correct position. I never spotted he was putting in the bush from the wrong side.

I have chosen to stop this. There are too many unknowns in this crappy movement. I learned a lot though! Thanks everyone.

clockboy did you watch the video? I know he has been ill, so that's what I put it down to because in the past he has made some excellent videos. I think I even recommended his videos here on this forum.

Yes he had Sciatica and could not walk with it. However he had an operation to put it right. I should have paid more attention I hang my head in shame. :)

I had a final look at the clock. After powering off the mainspring I removed the escapement which was relatively simple. I then powered up again and it stuck again. No movement whatsoever. 

I then took a pegwood and forced the pivot of the barrel adjacent wheel down in order to move to the other end of the elongated hole. And the wheels started moving! I was able to reproduce this behavior on several occasions. I may look into re-bushing only this pivot hold. My concern is that I am not able to drill it right, i.e. the drill finds its way towards the wrong end.

Any ideas?

Sorry don,t agree control of a drill is difficult as it will tend to drift.I give this advise from bitter experience, my advice for what it's worth is use a reamer

Again thank you all. 

I was torn between repairing and selling. I eventually decided to assemble the clock and sell it on ebay. I don't have the proper tooks to get it done right. I still have my 7733 waiting for service as the next challenge. I'd rather service / restore another old watch from the 60ies before.

I learned a lot from this:

  1. These 70ies Schatz Clocks had a better reputation (at least to me) than they deserve. The one I got must be considered crap.
  2. Repairing clocks is yet another story compared to watches.
  3. I need proper tools to get the job done the way I'd like to (the right way).
  4. Clocks have a significant wear if the material is poor and need quite some machining. You just don't know in advance if you're as inexperienced as I am.

Since the only thing that I don't have enough, is time, I'll stick with watches.

Anyone who is just starting out on clock repairs should never use any type of machinery on a clock. Irreparable damage can be caused in a flash, in all my years as a clockmaker I never ever drilled the plate to re-bush. Hand held reamers is the only safe way to re-bush as I have said that way you have complete control, if you follow the correct procedure nothing can go wrong, you take your time with the repair, also you yourself can feel the cut and you will be aware of how much the reamer is cutting a machine can’t, the difference in the type of brass is phenomenal. I have worked on many high value clocks and you won’t believe how hard the brass can be, some will even take the edge of a reamer and the brass just splinters away. A machine drill can be very handy in a work shop but for re-bushing don’t even think about it. Not even one with a slow feed control.

Just a little more to add to what I said in my previous post.

The brass used in antique clocks and I’m talking about clocks after 1900 but before. You might find a description that says it has never been repaired, that is not luck that is because it was made of top quality brass and steel both were much harder than today. That would apply to the spring wound or fusee wound clocks. Weight driven clocks are wonderful but they all have a common fault and that is the weights, when the clock has some wear and tear the clock is forced to carry on working, that’s why it is common to find a lot of damage in weight driven clocks, in particular the 8-day Long Case or Grandfather clock, yes they are the same. Re-bushing and worn pivots are the main problem with these, worn teeth also occur but not too often. 30 hour Long Case movements nearly everything will be worn that is because people do not wind them correctly they just pull on the chain, you are meant to take the weight yourself and pull on the chain this prevents wear and tear in the movement. I hope you find this helpful.

    • One of the problems with trying to Photograph Phils things are that his enjoyment was building these things so they tended to E falls on what will see if I can find some earlier pictures or any pictures I wasn't even sure because I was looking for that specific picture for somebody else and even it got the last version and that would have been the last version. You will note that he put the indexing on something that he could unscrew it or whatever and it can slide back out of the way so the rest of the lathe can be used as a lathe. With the lathe cut are actually coming down from the top I was there once where he demonstrated how to cut a pivot with the setup it was really beautiful. Older set up if I remember it's not a worm gear assembly in the thing in between the stepping motor and the holding block I believe this particular one was like a 100 to 1 gear ratio. Earlier version with watchmaker's lathe. Even looks like he is the watchmakers bed and then switch to something he made. Then I do have other pictures and things of the rotary stage in use. In the raw so if you tube videos here is an example of one were somebody's mounting a three jaw chuck. At one time there were available on eBay they were not cheap but if you're patient like I was I found one cheap on eBay. After you watch the video it look at his other videos he is a whole bunch of other examples of the same rotary stage. That I do know there are other pictures examples and possibly videos you just have to track them down.     • Escapement adjusting always interesting and depending upon the reference always confusing. Okay maybe it's not always confusing but it does lead to confusion. I have a PDF below it's actually a whole bunch of separate stuff including a hand out that came from a lecture that's on you tube. Then from that we get this image Consequences of doing things especially if you do things out of order or you do things for the wrong reason. Oh and even if the watches working I made the mistake one so showing my boss how tweaking the banking pins on a full plate on the timing machine made the amplitude get better and now he thinks that's what they're for and I don't think a fully grasped exactly what horn clearance means. Consequence of doing things. Notice what it says about opening and closing the banking pins and total lock? So yes I've had that on a full plate where it won't unlock at all and that's the banking pins or a combination of things basically. So banking pins unfortunately get moved. One of the ways to tell if it's been moved is the look straight down at the end of the fork with the balance wheel removed. Power on the fork push at the one side look at it push it to the other side also look at it and compare anything with the center reference the balance jewel and see if both sides of the same. No guarantee after the same there in the right place but at least are the same typically when people play with things one side will be way off from the other because they had no idea what they were doing at all because of course it's a full plate and you really have to paying attention and even then there's still hard to do. Then the other thing that comes up like it shows below is people often adjust the banking pins to do all those other things as opposed to horn clearance which is all that it's therefore and maybe bonus Guard pin clearance although you're supposed to deal with the guard pin is a separate thing like single roller gets bent in Or out or sometimes physically gets moved in and out. Some full plates older escapement's typically pallet forks held together with screws and you can actually unscrew and move the entire assembly in Or out more complications to deal with.     Escapement handout wostep nscc.pdf
    • If he was much younger and some sort of sports player it wouldn't be a problem. They would be in there and doing surgery and he'd be back on the field in no time. Unfortunately when you get older little things are bad and big things can be really bad so not good at all.
    • Where I work everything incoming watches whatever detailed descriptions are taken entered into a computer program and photograph of each item. Then ideally although it depends on who's doing the paperwork detailed descriptions can be quite good other times there lacking. Like I really like it with pocket watches if they would record the serial number it avoids confusion later on. Then when watch repairs are completed that is also entered in. It's one of the amusements I learned when I was in school instructor had a shop and commented about the important aspect of keeping detailed records of repairs. Because oftentimes a customer who got a new crystal will come back later on when the watch doesn't work and expect you to fix the entire watch for free. Then you can remind them that they just got a crystal. Strangely enough that keeps coming up or occasionally comes up where I work now. One of the problems of using the service marks on the case is that in the case of pocket watches oftentimes that's not the original case. Then case marks? What I was doing warranty work for a company I used to describe a code number in the back of the case and it would tell me the next time I see the watch that basically what I did I made no attempt at keeping track of customers because we had literally thousands of them I think they sold 30,000 of these watches and they would come back by the hundreds because they had a lifetime warranty. Yes that's a story all of itself but I would put a code number that would reference what was done to the watch the last time and think I had a date in there somehow so it did tell a story if you knew the code. Another shop I once worked out the number would reference the page in the book. So other than knowing we had been in there you would have no idea what happened because you have to go look at the page in the book to see what happened. Then the problem of how you examine a watch you should examine the watch in detail every single time to avoid complications. Although on vintage watches and this is a of amusement I have at work when people ask something and I say of the watches done when it leaves. This is because on vintage oftentimes problems won't show up until the watches much farther into the repair like it's now running and you discover things that you can't discover before because it wasn't running to discover them that also become sometimes difficult to have exact rigid prices are estimates of repairs or in the case of a pocket watch you may not find out if a casing problem to later on when you case it up in the watches running. I was just thinking for all those people that would like to leave a mark maybe you should learn to do what some of the past watchmakers did? Leave a mark but leave it in such a way that no one will ever find it? Typically not done for repair purposes but done for other reasons like identifying it's legit. I have a friend with a Gruen watch and one of the Roman numbers the bottom line that just looks like a line under extreme magnification actually says Gruen watch company or something equivalent. So here's a link showing how to mark your watch without being seen although that's not the actual title.     • I have acquired a Citizen Leopard 36000 watch. My reason for purchasing it was my desire to own a timepiece with a 36,000 BPH movement, and the price was reasonable. Another motivating factor was gaining hands-on experience with the mechanism. The watch is in good condition, but I intend to fully disassemble it for maintenance. First and foremost, if anyone has prior experience with this particular model, I would greatly appreciate their insights. I do not have access to Citizen’s specialized lubricants and will need to use the ones available to me, such as 9010, 8000, and 8300 grease. Additionally, I do not possess the appropriate oil for the pallet jewels and will only be able to clean them.
