Seiko Dial

Recommended Posts

Hi

There seems to be a few people on here know something about Seikos, so hopefully someone can help :). I have this nice little Seiko 5 (case ref 7009-6000A) that looks to me like someone has cleaned the dial with acetone or similar. All the painted on writing and lines have gone, including the reference number I think is usually on the bottom of Seiko dials.

How would I go about finding a replacement if I don't know the reference? Will any dial from a similar watch fit, or does it have to be specific? I think I would have needed a new dial anyway as there are no feet on this one, although I am not quite sure how it fits given the full size day/date rings. I wonder if the dial is supposed to fit to the movement holder? Anyway, any information welcome - thanks!

Stephen

Seiko from this period tend to have similar if not the same No. as the model number on the dial, it would probably be something like 7009-60xx followed by 2 or 3 letters. The 7000 series movements normally have a plastic movement spacer, the dial feet push fit into this & are not screwed in. Not too sure but I would suspect that a dial from a 7006, 7019 or possibly a 7S26 would fit. Try fleabay or speedtimerkollektion.com.

Thanks guys. The watch came to me in pieces so I'm not sure what goes with what. The movement does seem to be a good fit for the case, which as I said is referenced 7009 600A1. The only marking on the movement is 7009A. I've just noticed the day ring is additionally marked 870044Y, don't know if that is relevant.

I've had a closer look and it does have holes around the edge of the plate for dial feet, didn't notice that earlier. I'd reuse the dial I have if it had feet, and if I could do anything about the peculiar finish it has on it now. So now I need a dial with the feet in the right places as well.

Here is the model number that the dial came from.

My guess is that someone tried to use the dial and botched it.

The SNK is a 3:45 crown, and the 7009 is likely a 3:00 crown, which means the feet won't fit unless you have the right holder.

I think you will need to use the Seiko Finder to look for something similar for a 7009 where you can find a donor watch/dial, or go to Dagaz or any number of other suppliers and find a suitable replacement.

Good Luck

Thanks a lot for that, much appreciated. I have attached some more photos. You can't see from the first one but the case does have an offset for the crown - I would have just said at 4, glad to have your more precise information ;).

Sorry for the blurring on the next one, I was just wanting to show the  sockets on the plate for the dial feet. They do seem to correspond to the brighter markings on the back of the dial where I assume the dial feet used to be. As you can see there is evidence of glue, so perhaps as you say they weren't quite in the right place and someone tried to glue it on to the holder.

This last photo shows the two holders/spacers with it - not sure which fits where. Not sure any of this matters really as the dial I have is the wrong one and unusable, so I'll need to find a dial that fits the movement anyway.

Stephan,

Here is a great resource for/when working on Seiko's.  (BTW, 3:45 seems to be what Seiko aficionados use, while Seiko uses 4:00...go figure).  Here is the link, just scroll down till you find 7009A and download the file (PDF format).

almost all seiko dials are 28.5 mm. which means you can use almost any seiko dial that you like. i believe the only dials that you cannot use is the manual winder dials. quartz dials can be used if you want to modify them around the date window. not all dials will match up with the locations of the dial feet, tho.

here's your chance to really mod this watch if you want to. you just need to get some dial feet and dial dots.

you can even use a dial with date only - or no date at all.

its a shame about that original dial. that looked cool with the rally stripes.

    • if you're trying to keep track of conversations scattered all over the message board emails are an absolute must.   looking at the bell icon on the top of the page versus the emails today it looks like I got the correct amount of emails. So making some minor change based on the one of the images up above I started getting notifications again. But at times I still have a suspicion that something isn't quite right. I have some feeling that the message board may delay sending emails until something so seems to be a long delay between when you get your emails just a weird feeling things aren't quite right oh  and then even though I do seem to be getting emails I no longer get notifications of personal messages I don't find that out until I arrived at the message board where I'm pretty sure I used to get notifications of those two. So something is definitely changed on the message board. then for everyone not getting emails you do want to check your spam folder. I have found that sometimes were open up an email the system I use warns me that it thinks the email is evil and bad and I have no idea why he thinks some of the emails are and some are not. But this is actually the program I use not the email system which also has a mind of its own as to what it considers spam so you should always check your spam folder.
