Hello all! I would like to buy an ultrasonic washing machine. Elma caught my eye but it is way out of my hobby budget. So I have a few questions:

-what do you guys use, with what substances and what are your impressions?

-I've seen that different producers use different frequencies, from 28khz to 42khz - can anyone compare the use of one freq against another?

-how much power do I need? 30w, 50w, 100w?

This is what I use and has always given me good results:

only one machine, the beakers are also part of my equipment but bought separately.

So you put your movement parts in the cleaning fluid in the glass jar and then you put the jar in plane water in the ultrasonic mashine?  Or do you put the cleaning fluid directly in the ultrasonic machine?

Good morning Bogdan, I use the first machine displayed below. If I was purchasing again, I would probably purchase the one below, as I fill it with water at 50-60 degrees from the kettle, and when it is running it generates heat anyway.

The answer to your second question is yes. I have small amounts of cleaner in little jam jars and suspend the in the water in a gauze basket.

I use the same (L&R) cleaning solutions with my L&R cleaning machine getting excellent results. I did try Elma which gave the same cleaning results but I thought it was a bit smelly.

I tried it because of price & also I seem to remember Mark was trying it. I personally think that the ultra sonic action does most of the work & the cleaners are much the same as each other

Geo, was your recommendation for the second one based purely on price or are you unhappy with the first model.

I wasn't over impressed with the heater, so I don't see the point in paying the extra. As I said, first heat up the water in a kettle to the temperature that you require, and the heat generated by the ultrasonics will keep it pretty much where you need it for the duration of the washing. Also remember that even cold water will do, as it is the high frequency vibrations that blast the muck off.

I think your spot on CB, the cleaners de-grease and brighten the finish. I get excellent results with priory cleaner, it is ammonia based and is super value for money.

@Geo: do you think I need a 2L ultrasonic? I believe a 500ml is more the enough. Or do you think the bigger one has more ultrasonic-waves/cavitation power?

p.s.: Please assume I say Hello in all my posts, I mean no disrespect!

The 500ml will be more than enough capacity wise for watch parts. Just make sure that you get one that about 40khz to give efficient cleaning, some of the really cheap ones are less than that. The only reason I wanted the larger size; I wanted to clean motorcycle carburettors.

Regarding hello, I only tend to say hi or hello when I initially get involved in a conversation for the first time. :)

I use the exact same machine, works fairly well and I'm happy with it. Cleaning fluid in a little jar with the parts to clean, plain water in the machine, jar in the water, in the plastic basket.

Same here minus the plastic basket!

Cheers,
