I am interested in understanding what the minimum effective method is for removing balance staffs without damaging the balance wheel arms. I have seen the use of a Platax tool, a balance staff remover, a Horia jewelling tool and a lathe to cut the rivet. I have also seen people get lucky and just punch out the staff with a staking set. What do you all do to remove balance staffs safely? A Balance Staff Remover Using a Horia tool

If you also bought the cheap case tube press, and had it work only a few times before it broke, I also had that issue. I attempted to laser weld it, but that didnt hold long. Then I tried to epoxy a sleeve on the failed end, after I milled it out. That also failed. On the other side of the device however, there is a lot of stock and a hole for the plastic die to press into. So I turned a piece of tool steel to fit the hole, left a collar on it to distribute the force, and bored a hole to fit the pushers. Now it's a machine worth $60 Here's the side of the failure And here is the fix -

Looking good! It's very nearly there. You'll have it finished before you know it
