A REALLY simple question: band orientation

My Dad taught me: "buckle at 12" but I am not sure how that applies here.  Which end should go to 12?

Embarrassed to ask really, but this has been the watch from hell...I just want it to go back to my sister-in-law!!

Finally got all the markers installed and a new glass.

I think the shorter piece should be at 12. My rule of thumb is the release clasp should be where the thumb nail can pry the buckle open.

buckle or shorter length at 12 is the default but depending on the design of the strap or bracelet or clasp or deployant, reorient as comfort demands.

To open by thumb, the normal rule is:

Strap with buckle, the latter goes at 12.
Strap with deployant clasp, the latter at 6
Bracelet with clasp, at 6.

Writings or logos on the buckle / clasp also are useful as an indication for orientation.

BTW, when adjusting bracelets by removing or adding links, do so the clasp remains centered and the quick adjust pin in a middle hole. Seem logic but not every owner or shop does that correctly.
