Please help, does this seem like a reasonable request or an attempt to scam or create fakes?

Recommended Posts

I'm selling a vintage Tudor Oyster from the 1950s, I put the model number but not the serial number in the description. This message I received on Etsy seemed like an odd request/circumstance to me but maybe I'm being paranoid.

What are your opinions on this? Should I give them the serial number, a portion of the serial number, or nothing at all? Thank you for any help!

The intimation is that they are potentially phishing for a serial to subsequently turn around and claim it's stolen. I would have her provide you with the serial of the stolen watch (which she won't have if it's a scam, and will likely disappear), and tell her that you will subsequently reply with a photo of yours. If it's an honest request, no harm and everyone is happy. If not, she'll probably just never reply.

I agree with spectre6000, the request looks fishy (or phishy!) to me. When selling an Omega on eBay I obscured the last 4 numbers of the serial number for the reason Spectre6000 states. If anyone would have stated that the watch was stolen and belonged to them (this has happened to others and can cause huge headaches), I would ask them to tell me the last 4 digits. I personally would block them from bidding, maybe a bit harsh but better safe than sorry, I have blocked potential buyers for less.

On another subject, "Hey congratulations! You have won a thousand pounds! Give us your bank account details and it will be deposited straight away!".

Be careful people! Scammers are out there in every field! Question everything and give them nothing!

Not the full number.. you can give the first few digits but leave out the last 3. This way a real buyer would be able to tell a fake if the model number and serial number don't match. There are some fake Seikos where the same serial number is reused throughout so there may be similar for Rolex or Tudors.

    • Could it be an abbreviation for Denier? "Denier (/ˈdɛniər/) or den (abbreviated D), a unit of measure for the linear mass density of fibers, is the mass in grams per 9,000 metres of the fiber. The denier is based on a natural reference: a single strand of silk is approximately one denier; a 9,000-metre strand of silk weighs about one gram." The pivot gauge looks interesting, however I wouldn't trust myself to drive a pivot into a wedge incase it jams and gets damaged/snaps trying to get it free. More a comment on my ability and incompetence than the quality or design of the tool 🤣
    • @clockboy The damage on the movement much worse. The images against the green background are my watch the other 2 are from the internet. The rotor has erased the perlage. I am surprised how is this watch still running.
    • Hi All, I recently bought a few gauges on Ebay. One of those was my actual target, a roller jewel gauge. Pictured below was one of the other gauges I received. From what I gather, this one is for measuring pivots. No sure if I'm right here. A confirmation of my assumption would be great. The gauge also has an abbreviation of "DEN". I have looked around and don't find this relative to watchmaking. Any clue to what this abbreviation means? Thanks, Don
