You know how it is, its late at night, you have had a couple of whiskeys you are browsing ebay and you see something, you place an impulse bid and wake up in the morning to find you have won it.....

ACtually quite pleased, its a bit rough but price was good, hopefully when it arrives it will be in a state worth restoring.

I like military clocks, I've got a couple of Russian MIG clocks, a Russian Tank Clock, an American Seth Thomas Navy Deck clock and now a Waltham aircraft clock.

Just need to get myself some British ones now....

It will be a couple of weeks before it arrives, but there are a couple of taster photos of it on ebay.

No idea of its exact age yet other than it cant be later than the 1950s, but if I am lucky will be of WWII vintage

Customs is not an issue...yet,

At the moment if it is under $1000 Aud including postage there are not import fees in Australia though the government wants to change that.

Price was low enough if it turns out to be a junker it will be a good one for me to practice on as I've not worked on an aircraft clock before.

I just can't help myself.

Was trawling ebay again and found an Elgin Pioneer aircraft clock for sale in Australia.

I do know this model of clock was used in some Australian made aircraft and what was very interesting about this clock is it has scratched on the back of it A20-343, this is the service number for a Wirraway Aircraft that was made during the war in Australia.

Only 15 Wirraway aircraft still survive out of the 755 built.

I've not managed to confirm that this model of clocks were used on Wirraways yet, but if so its very exciting.

Anyhow enjoy a couple of photos of it, it is not working and judging by the rust on the screws it could be in a bad state, but we will see.

I posted in the clock forum but I'm excited I found this thread again as this is what led me to the site to begin with! 

My clock looks very similar to your aircraft clock. Do you know if this one is also an aircraft clock? Thanks in advance for your help!

      Hah! Well, California will have to do. Lived in TX for a brief period back in the early 70s, though, so maybe that counts. 🙂 Funny you should mention making vacuum tubes- I've actually tinkered with that! It's REALLY tough to do, and I've never made one more complicated than a simple diode that barely worked, but I have played around at it. But there's just no infrastructure for vacuum tube fabrication. I can get a lathe and learn how to use it to make complex parts, and while it might take a while to learn- and money to get the equipment, of course- it is possible to do more or less "off the shelf". But vacuum tubes, not so much. There are a few folks out there doing some crazy cool work with bespoke tubes, but they have setups that are far beyond what I can manage in my environment and it's mostly stuff they built by hand. I also have been playing with making piezoelectric Rochelle Salt crystals to replace ancient vacuum tube turntable needles- nobody's made those commercially for probably 60 years. I'm a sucker for learning how to do weird things no one does any more so I can make things no one uses work again. (I think this is drifting off the topic of lathes, lol).

      You shoulda been born in Texas. Tough to make a vacuum tube though. You can substitute with a MOSFET eq ckt I guess. I was playing around making a pinion the other day. More to it than meets the eye.

      Replacing crystal, do I need a bezel tool?

      Well, turns out it was a fake bezel! The crystal is domed mineral glass and I was able to find a cheap replacement that should be here in two days.  I used my crappy little press to pop out the cracked crystal, Ill give the case a good cleaning in the meantime and do a once over on the movement.
