I am planning on making a stem for a repair I am doing. I have done the measurements but would love some tips on what to cut first. I just got a carbide tip graver with a refill tip and some stock steel. Here is the part and my measurements,6086da1e22c453dad17c9db13ea6b146.jpg711ce13abec0af5ec949298869deedbf.jpg

Taping could be a challenge as this is new to me.

Start this end and work your way along. For you to get the perfect square you will need to use indexing on your lathe. Be careful when taping the thread use grease or oil as it is very easy to snap it off

May be a dumb question, but would it make any sense to tap first, and then start the turning? It would suck to get all the cutting done just to end up snapping the stem when you're taping it...

Why make a stem for a AS1950/51 . Are they hard to find? Or is it just for fun or getting some experience?
Almost sure i have a AS1951 stem?

I am just learning. 18S pocket watch stems are hard to find so I figure i will get some skills:)

Ok, update. I broke the stem trying to die the threads. So i have started again. Here is the progress. PS I have ordered a double roller guide for filing the square.4aa23fd67926ad9d66fcf6f9deebb1b7.jpg4d0dcdb90f9c69e73a0298d04b4331d6.jpg38387517f39a3aafa9a0e21e128e5410.jpg62233b0cd8f6319df0f244d0ff24dfcc.jpga3d05b29a250f0ee13db60f880a89456.jpg9752d26e6efaaaa9c90925ad66cd6cb8.jpg8a454a17fa865d0ec2be9f59957d1105.jpge5dad77548fe3eddbc8fb934b6f2c680.jpg
Still need to carve out a small step, add the square gap and make the threads. Not sure if i need to heat up the steel to soften it prior to tapping. I am using tempered blue steel.
