Howzit Watch Fans, ...I'd like to share a nice watch with a history with you . I just acquired an Eterna Matic Kon Tiki . Eterna is famous for Introducing the ball bearing rotor on todays self winding watches . The Logo for Eterna is 5 ball bearings .

I have attached a link called The story of Eterna :

http://eterna-fanatic.com/pages/eterna-information.php

The Kon Tiki commemorates the the Pacific Voyage of explorer Thor Heyerdahl on a Balsawood raft in 1947 ....

The Kon Tiki watch I have has a movement numbered 1422 UD , and is from 1961 . Eterna chose to date their watches by movement numbers instead of serial numbers because they changed movement numbers so often as demonstrated by the fact that in 1961 alone , there are 9 movement numbers .

The watch commemorates the voyage with a gold emblem on the case back depicting the sailing raft "Kon Tiki " .

On to the watch....the first few pics are the sellers...

On to my pics .....The wach was serviced according to the seller , and I found fresh silicone lube on the case back and crown gaskets . Also a very clean movement with virtually no marks or scratches  visible . I cleaned the case and installed a new crystal , and although the original Gay Freres bracelet came on the watch , I found the links to feel too lightweight and rather chintzy ,[ that's my take ] . So I installed the links from a bracelet I had in my stash but used the original end links , which needed a bit of body and fender work , and also kept the original deployment buckle with the Eterna / Kon Tiki logos and the Gay Freres inscription .

Hi Ricardo,

Nice watch. This model is probably one of my earliest memories of watches as I remember reading Eterna's advertisement in the Reader's Digest of the early 70s which gave a summary of Heyerdahl's feat.

Also in those magazines were Rolex's which were found on the inside cover (full-spread) and Seiko's (one page only!).

I have a few and I noticed that they 'do' have individual serial numbers so maybe their policy changed?

Their Policy may have changed , and I did notice a serial number on my watches movement . I mentioned the dating system from a site called "Wrist Chronology ". I am including that information....

Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject can shed some light on Eterna's dating system .

I would imagine that table would indicate what movements would be in use at the time. Individual movements having individual numbers.

Frankly I'm surprised that your watch doesn't have a serial number as the Kon-tiki was their flagship and would have been the highest priced (unless they had gold models). The ones I have are the basic 1000 and basic autos and these have serial numbers on the movement.

Will dig them out and post some pictures.

Hi Ricardo,

Sorry I missed out the part where you said you had a serial number.

I don't know how to date them... they're not like Omega or older Rolex where the serial numbers are available online.

IIRC I have two automatics and a manual-wind. I currently have a ladies auto (1441) on my desk which is giving me a headache and I may put it aside for another day. Will try to locate them and post some pics.

Here's a link to a post I made on the hand-wind.

    • That's the right technique Mal 👍 If you are ok with a loupe ( which I'm not ) then pick up the dial in your left hand and make a tripod holder out of 3 fingers and then exactly how Mal and me described with your right hand, press and flick out the stem at the same time. You need three fingers to do this, i use my ring ring finger , sounds like mal uses his little finger, just whatever you feel comfortable with. The key point and dangerous side to this is the tweezers or driver slipping off the release screw. Stablise your left arm by resting your elbow on your bench, so that you can hold the movement horizontally flat, use a x5 loupe to view  and good light so you can see well and have a good tight fitting screwdriver to push the release down. Or as suggested a pusher mounted solid upside-down somewhere then all you need to do is push your movement up to it. I'll rig something up in a bit to show you what i mean.
    • Thanks Michael, shes a real soldier, it would take a tank to knock her off her feet.  Shes surprised even me and i knew she was a tough cookie.  Good for you Michael, you keep at it. I've been reading your posts re. your watchroom they're inspiring and it doesn't matter how long it takes you to get there its about the journey. Rome wasn't built in a day, our watchcaves are our solitudes, our own little empires where we can shut ourselves away from the crap that goes on around us in the world. I look forward to seeing you progress, I have my own ideas how i like to do things. But in answer to your questions on that thread, just let your workspace evolve around you and how you work. You wont figure it out straight away but you will know when to change it and when to leave it alone. But most of all just enjoy it.
    • That can be tricky. Sometimes I hold the movement from the edges in left hand and with right hand I push the release with tweezers and simultaneously pull the stem out with right hand pinky or something.
    • I see what you mean. I must admit I’m not entirely comfortable with that but I can’t see a better method than what you suggest. I’d like to see something like this mirror with a short spike: https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/mirror-for-observing-movements Place it on, push the spike on the post with one hand and release the stem with the other hand. Minor problem, it doesn’t exist.
    • Hope you mum keeps on mending. I was adamant that I was going to get myself going after my stroke. I was only 52. I still have a lot of life left to live. Some people give up. Some people don't let it beat them. Your mum sounds like one of the winners. 👍
