Hi Everyone

I will introduce my self and ask my question at the same time.

My name is Robert, live in southern Ontario in Canada. Been a watch collector of all styles, autos, manual winds, Quartz.

Been doing builds of numerous 6498 6497 ,2824 and various mods, etc.

Swap out non working Quartz movts, lots of simple repairs , hands, crystsls, bracelets, and battery changes etc for people. I just started looking into the Autos esp 2824.

Its a hobby, but a passion, I like most of you work full time, so its hard to find the necessary time to sit and work and learn, but I need to, alot more. Retirement is still 5 years away, so I can't wait that long. I have had many successful repairs etc, and failures, which makes me want to do better.

Finding this site is a god send.

I built a few nice watches for my wife, with date, 2824. Been over a year everything is fine then yesterday one watch won't run.

Winds and stores power in mainspring by the oscillating weight or hand winding. The balance will not turn. I will be disassembling the movt as upon removing the reversing wheel piece and looking, releasing power to the mainspring, I don't see much at first glance.

I am thinking its the wheel train, but just wanted to ask for opinions.

I am going to be on here alot more, after subscribing to Marks you tube, was excited to find those very helpful videos.

Anyway any responses from you are appreciated, in the meantime.

Thank you

Robt

Welcome from California.  :)

Regarding the watch issue, I'd say if the balance doesn't turn at all that the issue may be with the balance staff such as a broken or bent pivot.  If it turns but won't run then the balance may be overbanked.

I should note that twice now I've had watches that didn't run because a loose screw had gotten into the works and stopped it cold.  That's probably the first thing to look for!

Good luck with your diagnostics.  I'm interested in hearing how it turns out.

Aloha Robert ,

Good input from RyMoeller ,...I have bought a few watches for a good price because they didn't run , only to find a loose screw in the works stopping the movement .

You can try removing the auto winding mechanism , letting down the mainspring power , removing the balance and cock , pallet and bridge , and then turning the crown to wind the watch and observe if the train moves freely .

If so I would think it's as Ry suggests , the roller jewel came out of the pallet fork , or the pivots on the pallet or balance are broken or bent ..

Thank you Ry and Ricardo, your suggestions will be my next course of investigation.
When I get this done and find the problem I will post to let you know.
Appreciate your comments and suggestions, taking the time to respond.

Hi Guys
Ok so I stripped the ETA2824-2 that I bought Nov 2015, built a 38 mm watch for my wife. As stated earlier in the OPB just last month it stopped working.
I asked if it had been dropped, - nope.
Anyway upon stripping, when I got to the wheel train , using a fine oiler tip I gently tried to see where the jamming was occuring. Seeing that there was no movement in the train,I looked at it with my loupe, and saw nothing in the way.
Upon loosening the balance bridge screw off 1 turn - the balance started spinning.
Ok so checked the train and it was moving nicely. Retightened the bal bridge screw 1 turn and its still spinning nicely.

So maybe it was shocked?
Maybe bumped or dropped?
The pallet fork , escape wheel are interacting as should.

*****Any thoughts?

I will now refinish stripping down the complete movt, clean and oil and rebuild.

As a note , the movt ran as should right upon delivery, then after install for 10 months.

Thanks everyone
Now on to that "2824 key lock mystery"

Very Good , I am happy to see that you got everything working again . As for thoughts on why It was not working , I would guess that a pivot was binding or something was touching the hairspring or balance wheel .  I have had this happen when I installed a balance and did not notice that the outer coils of the hairspring got hung up on the center seconds wheel in a tight movement .

Sorry I can't shed any light on the Key lock mystery .  A member had mentioned that it looked like the part that held the day ring in . Is this part accounted for ?

Maybe send a message to ETA where you got the picture and part number from and ask customer support .
