Just bought this tool and am wondering how to use it. Says it’s a Elgin National Jewel Pin Gauge…but not sure how it would be used to measure the jewel diameters or the hole size.

Can you give an idea of scale please JD.  I wondering if this is only part of the gauge.

Maybe it should come with a tapered pin. The jewel hole is slid down the pin until it comes to a stop, then placed beside the rule to get the corresponding hole size.

If that's the case, then JD, will have to turn a wire to the correct taper in order to use the gauge.

Is the graduated part of the gauge tapered?

I'm wondering if you slide it between the fork horns of your pallet fork (with safety pin removed) to measure the gap and determine what size impulse jewel (or pin) you should use.

you wouldn't want to do that it's a pain to put those back where you found them.

Then the annoyance is I've seen the tool before and I see how it's used just can't quite remember and definitely don't remember where I saw it being used
