What is this shock spring called and how do I remove it?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I'm working on a Roamer watch with a ST-96 movement, and it has these shock springs that I never saw before and can't find anywhere online. They can turn but don't seem to have a tooth keeping it in place.

The dial was glued on so I spend a lot of time cleaning glue off everywhere on the movement, so I might be missing a little grove, but I really don't think so.

Though ST-96 is originally Swiss, you might have bought a deluxe Mumbi special.

Thats not a springy spring, just keeps the end stone put. Best to clean it in place.

Thanks Nucejoe!

Now that I look at it, it makes sense.

Thanks for saving me a lot of frustration!

With one or two tabs slightly raised, end stone can be wiggled in the jewel housing.

Tabs when lowered back on end stones might not tightly secure end stones, try shaping the tabs curved ( concave down , convex up) so tabs push on end stones when lowered back on end stones.

Good luck pal

This looks like the shock system  Yoni's  watch has, but they might be different systems with different names and patent.

I think the spring on this one has some springness, whilst tabs on OP's watch  lack noticable springness.

Both best get cleaned in place, frustrating that one can't know ,how good of a shape the end stone or hole jewel underneath it is in, until you remove and check it. Flawed design indeed.

I guess TG is where you'd know if the jewels are faulty.

I recently worked on one of these. Based on what I was able to find, it's a Ruby Neutro shock setting.

Follow @Nucejoe's advice here. Both on leaving them alone, and doing your best to pre-bend the tab so when you push it back down it puts some tension on the jewel. It's not easy.

Thread with my trials and tribulations.

Yep, classic Mumbai special 🥴

The FHF/ST 96 is commonly used as I believe it was made in India. It's commonly seen in fake watches, like Favre Leuba (this one also had the dial glued on)
