Correct name for a component please!

Hi

I'm renovating my dad's old Ricoh Riquartz and I need the correct name for this broken component... I suspect it is a "date jumper" but would like confirmation before I try to find a new one.

The date ring was jammed.

On disassembly and investigation I found that the plastic component that kicks on the day and date was broken and jamming up the mechanism.

I think I can source a new one if the correct name for this component is the "date jumper".

Yes..  it's a Riquartz 580. 

There are some components available from Cousins in the uk. The most comprehensive parts list is at Jules Borel in the States.

I would call that a "day/date driving wheel". i.e. it drives the day and date wheels.

The "jumpers" are the springs which flip the day/date over.

I think these break when someone tries to do quick set between 9pm and roughly 3am.

Are these plastic parts really available?  Looks like a quality movement that should be fixed if possible.

No. The purpose of the flexible finger is exactly to give protection for this occurrence, it just bends back. However with the years plastic may become brittle and break anyway.

Thanks for your interest, advice and replies.

It is a nice watch... my mum gave it to my dad in 1980 I think.

It's a 5 Jewel quartz... it still runs (apart from day date).

Dad didn't look after it too well. I think age did for the component. He never had it serviced... just changed the battery every few years.

My understanding was it was a day/date 'finger'...but I can't find that part listed...however the "day date drive wheel" is available as a spare.

I've serviced the movement best I can, polished up the case and removed the scratches from the mineral glass (elbow grease and successive emery papers from 1000 to 10,000 grit.

Fixing the day date will be great.

I just want to get it back to something like it was when dad received it.

For now... it's going back into storage until I find "the bit".

I have been looking for another 580 moment ricoh "spares or repairs" but nothing available.

Is there any chance of a generic component?

My approach is to watch ebay every day (save your search and set an email reminder).

There is a cal 590 on ebay now.  You never know...could be a match for this part.

A donor watch can appear at any time on Ebay ot Yahoo auctions Japan.

Beside that, an acceptable replacement could likely by 3D printed.

I dont think I can print something that small and precise...wish I could!!  Some printing service shops might be able to, however.  I think it would be easy to do the cad design.

Hi

I just saw the 590.. it's actually nice looking but I'm not sure it'll be correct. However... there is a 580 on Ebay in NYC. The calibre is east to spot; obvs because of the day date but also the crown is at 4 o'clock.

I will speak to my accountant (Mrs C).

Perhaps I'll get that, remove the part.. and see if I can spec it up and copy it. I'll see.

Seiko 7N36 is usually configured for 3:18 stem.  It is not at true 4:00.  The date wheel will line up in a window at 3 or 3:18.  The Day wheel is not interchangeable.  Neither line up with a true 4:00 crown.

Correct. In fact, a standard date wheel  for window at 3, lines up when the crown is positioned every 1.93 minutes, that is what Seiko does to use the same wheel with crown positions at either 15 or 18 minutes - the latter is actually something in between 18 and 19.

That being said replacement of a mov.t for a another is not as easy at may seems, not just the size must match, but also thickness, height of the step, dial feet positions, size and height of the hands pinions, Then you need a suitable casing ring, but in the world of 3D printing that is the lesser of the problems.

And there's the Miyota 6P00 or 6P80 where orienting 30 degrees clockwise would give the kind of configuration you're after. But even here the extra setting capability is only for changing month. The normal setting mech is used for changing date (pull one click out) and day/time (two clicks out). 

Now we're all intrigued on the 'why' of your question!

This is my ongoing project of renovating my dad's old (circa 1980) Riquartz 580. Some are already aware of this. In essence it's all ready for reassembly BUT the plastic calendar drive wheel/finger has disintegrated. The replacement part is obsolete...so I'm looking for a donor watch to cannibalise and/or find a complete drive wheel to make a copy. I might even just try to make the part myself.

I was considering a backup plan of replacing the movement. Not my preferred option... as the riquartz movement is really quite cool. However... the crown is at 4 o'clock (there is also the complication of a recessed push button at 2 o'clock which zeroes the second hand. So that intrudes into the case too.

Ideally... I just want to find a donor watch but they're not that easy to come by. There is one in NYC at the moment at an acceptable price. But I'm in UK.

I eventually found a guy locally who was sitting on 38 NOS Ricoh 580 movements.

Sparing the details... the watch is restored and like new!
