Bulova NY office closed

I just got off the phone with a Bulova representative. He told me they've officially closed Bulova's New York office permanently due to Covid-19. That's a lot of history that just got shut down... Hadn't seen that in any news/blogs/etc., so thought I'd share.

Sad news. The master tool and die maker that taught me the right way to machine things worked there. I should send him a note and let him know...

Bulova is moving to Torrance, CA. Right where citizen UsA headquarters is.

The reason I called Bulova in the first place was because I needed a warranty repair on the one and only new watch I've ever owned. It was a silly and obvious repair (four case screws came loose), but being the sort of person that takes up this sort of hobby, it's rare I own things with warranties, and I wanted to preserve it. 

Part of Bulova's moving means that inventory is moving, and they're not set up yet. As a result, any Bulova specific anything is delayed out many months right now. A bit crazy. My watch was from back when Bulova got a new CEO ca. 2014 and he tried to move the brand back up market with some higher end pieces with ETA movements. I got it NOS 6 years after it was produced, and combined with Citizen not stocking ETA stuff and all the rest, I didn't have to wait the multiple months. 

Unfortunately, it seems they don't actually service watches any more. They replace movements (which they don't stock, and can't get in my case), or they replace the watch. Apparently, they won't even regulate a movement anymore! Since my watch didn't have a Citizen group movement to begin with AND is 6 years out of production, my warranty turned out to be worthless unless I wanted to trade my watch in for one of equal or lesser value (which, in Bulova's current lineup, is all but two watches). Kind of a bummer. I looked long and hard to find that specific model. But I guess it frees me up to do all the warranty voiding things I would do otherwise, so... Cool.

  Well, thanks for the heads-up.  I also own a brand new Bulova, given as an anniversary gift from my workplace.  I now plan to just shrug my shoulders and work on it myself.  

I hear of so many watchmakers that operate in similar fashion these days.

A unfortunate problem of when a watch company gets absorbed by another company what happens to it. Initially like in this case they let Bulova run Independents but at some point in time it basically is only a name.
