My datejust stopped working

Hey guys, I’m Oscar from New York City. I love watches since I was a child, collecting Benetton, Casio and Swatch watches. My first luxury watch is a Rolex datejust and was a gift from my grandfather. It’s in mint condition but recently stopped working. Before it broke, the winder was making a weird noise I was pulling it out to wind and to set the time. When I wind, the winder still does the winding sound but the watch doesn’t move. I would like to know if that is just a service or some more bigger problem. Also, if you can recommend me a place to take it in the US. All opinions will be welcome and thank You !!

Next question, dose the seconds hand rock back and forth but stays in place as you shake the watch? Can you hear it tic as you shake?

Pull the stem out to set position, shake the watch as you advance hr and minute hands, see if seconds hand move forward any.

If you don't hear its oscilator tic and seconds hand wont budge, you should take it to a reputable watch maker, letting sit in drawer over extended time period is not good for it. You wouldn't know until back is openned and movement checked.

Beautiful watch.

Good luck.

Hi  Oscar welcome to the forum.  Grinding noises whem winding the stem can usually be attributed to the setting lever or setting lever spring being broken or misplaced and or the sliding pinion not engaging properly. In either case it sounds like it requires servicing.

Just for example I have attached a tech sheet, not of a rolex but an ETA to highlight the complexities of a timepiece.
