I understand the OP's desire to not make things worse than what they are. There are tasks for learners and others for watchmakers.

Hi guys. Been doing some much needed gardening.
I'm based in London UK.
Will have to part stripdown to at least test which coils work. Not sure how to test circuit board though.
My multimeter probes are HUGE so a bit of tape and two sewing needles should convert to something I can use.
Rogart, where abouts are you?
Great move JD. Now when you get it out make sure you at least get i bit of grease down the stem and onto the collet.
Work it up and down a few time so the it isn't difficult without the movement installed.
If you can't get it easier then you will have to disassemble the stem and winding button from the case and make adjustment although it does require a special wrench.
I do have a spare one you could borrow or you could look on eBay.
I have found when releasing the spring it,s best to steady with a piece of pegwood so it releases gently without flying away. For the trior style springs I made a removing tool out of peg wood. A hole in the middle & three cut outs so all I have to do is twist & they release without any chance of flying. Or you can purchase these tools but I found my peg wood version works fine.
