Hi all,

I have always loved watches and owned a few, my best was (still is) a Certina DS Cascadeur (I think that’s how it’s spelt) quartz chronograph with an eta 251.265 movement.

I have never done much apart from batteries and straps but now I need to change the movement in my Certina as it won’t reset the chronograph to zero, and the swatch people say they can’t repair it as it’s over ten years old (21 years old).

Hoping to get some help and advice from you guys.

thanks

Steve

Welcome Steve,

Changing a movement in a watch like this is not that difficult if you’ve done it before and have the right tools, but for a one off you are likely to spend as much on tools to do it properly as you would paying a professional to do it for you, or risk damaging something in the process.

Also, a complete movement is an extreme solution to what may be a simple problem if you can find a competent watchmaker to service it for you (see here https://www.watchrepairtalk.com/topic/2332-eta-251626-service-walkthrough-the-high-end-quartz-chronograph/). At this age, you could also find that the issue is due to sticky pushers in the case which may require the seals to be replaced as they are taken apart to be cleaned.

If this is all about the journey and not the destination though, then you’ve come to the right place!

First of all, if this just resets to the same wrong place every time, then all you need to do is correct that with these instructions https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=Z2xlYXZlYW5kY28uY29tfHRlY2huaWNhbHxneDoyYTM0NWRmNDk1NDZlNzYw (step E).

If not then I would start by taking the back off and having a good hard look with a magnifying glass at what happens when you press that reset button. Does it make good contact with the swtich on the movement, is there any dirt in there, etc.

If you want to go further with this then worth starting a new thread in the reapir advice section as more people will see it there.

Thanks for the great reply, originally I was thinking of looking into a repair, I only changed my views when I realised I could buy a complete new movement at a reasonable price, also thinking of the future and if these would still be available.

If I replaced the movement I could then practice on the old one and see if I could get it working again. I do have tools to do most of the work and I don’t mind purchasing some more as I have a few watches in my collection now. I will check the link you supplied and consider my options first, but I would hate to miss out on getting the new movement only to find out I can’t get one later if needed.

When reset it jumps forward but never goes back to 12(zero).

thanks again for your help.
