Stupid question!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is my first post, hopefully not my last!

I have a Seiko Seahorse 'Waterproof Diashock 17 jewels' that I recently got up and running - "left in a cupboard for 20 years", but I don't think it's quite right.... it runs perfectly well and I can set the time with two notches out on the crown, but...

Shouldn't the crown rest flush with the body of the watch and should I be able to set the date separately to the hour/minute setting?

The watch looks and runs great but it doesn't feel right, or am I looking for functions that don't exist?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

Most Seiko,s the first position out is for setting the date and the second position out is for setting the hands. The crown should be flush with the case after settings are completed. Some are push fit and some are screw down crowns.

Is it definitely two clicks on crown?
Seahorse I know use a 7625 movement which, according to my sources, is only one click. Date is set by moving past midnight until it changes then back to 9pm then again past midnight etc.

If "Plato" goes to this web site http://www.seiko.co.uk/customer-support/support/instruction-booklets

& enters the caliber in the search box he can download the instruction manual.

Not sure if the early Calibres are in that link.

Plato - there should be 2 four digit numbers on the bottom of the dial, e.g. 6608-8010.

The first is the calibre number, which should also be on the movement and the second the case number.

From the calibre number we should be able to find if this has a quickset date, but I would suspect it doesn't.

Photos are also helpful!

Thanks all for your interest, the full model number is 6602-8990. I did try the Seiko link originally but I couldn't find it there or online generally... all I can see is that the crown on similar watches seem flush but others don't? It's not a 'screw down' and I don't think it has any dirt in the way (I removed the movement to replace the crystal).

I'll add some photos as soon as I get to it on the weekend. I'd rather not do any work on it if there's nothing wrong... I have other watches to practice on first... I'm very new to horology so excuse my ignorance too!

6602 doesn't have a quickset date, so you have to wind past midnight to 2 or 3 am, then back to 9 or 10 pm, then forward again to set the date.

It's possible that the stem is not installed correctly in the movement. Try pressing down the release button to remove and re-installing it.

Thank you both again for your assistance.

The wrong stem seems to be most likely as I have tried reinstalling it again with release button fully depressed. I was quite happy with the experience gained from replacing the crystal but getting the stem right will be good practice too!

I have another Seiko (an automatic 7005B, I think) that I'm certain that just needs a strip down and service to get right so I'll get stuck into that one first.

All the best,

Geraint.

    • Thanks everyone for the replies. It seems setting the hand is a bit of a guessing game, and I thought there would be a very specific way to do it. Since the reserve indicator hand moves clockwise as the spring is wound, I tried setting it right at the start of the black side. But setting it there doesn't really make sense, because by the time the spring is halfway wound, the hand is only at the end of the red side... In my head halfway wound shouldn't mean the hand is still "in the red."
    • Lovely part of the country! I spend most of my days driving along the A64 for work in and around York. I'll be sure to drop plenty of questions soon! I've actually got a couple of watches on the way that I'm pretty sure I'll need some help with! They look pretty beat up from the pics but I love a challenge and an excuse to buy more tools 🤣
    • I have two of these in my home. You need to remove the movement from the case, take off the hands and remove the dial and take a few good photos of the front plate so I can see what the problem is. The round nut unscrews and the hands pull off pull them off from the center and not the tips as you could break them.
    • I asked the question of one of the sellers. Its for removing the pins and making the holes in motorbike drive belts. God knows why they were both in two seperate joblots of watchmaking tool, thats bizarre. I haven't posted your setting lever steel yet mike, been busy with my mum past few days and had a locked myself in at home lazy watch repair day today 🙂 but I'm out tomorrow so i will get it off to you then.
    • Hi everyone, I tried looking for answers on this online but came up with nothing, so I'm hoping some of you knowledgeable people might be able to help. I have an Elliot clock that has been in my family for at least 4 generations. I recently enherited it, and I'm trying to get it to run properly again, as it's been neglected a bit.  Here,s the problem. These clocks have a silencer mechanism, which is supposed to stop it from chiming between 11PM and 7AM but for some reason mine is silent between 1AM and 9AM. I have tried figuring out how to adjust it but have not managed. Does anyone have any idea on how to correct this? Please find attached some pictures of the clock. Thank you!
