Trench Watch Repair

Recommended Posts

I purchased this little trench watch from ebay the other day, the case is silver and in good condition, however the workings are not fairing so well.

I started to strip it down today, as I am fairly new to repairing watches I may never get it back together again but I will try, my question is, what sort of movement is it, who made it (no makers mark) can I get replacement parts?

The balance spring has broken, and I could not find a pallet? the pallet wheel is different from anything I have seen before, I will try and get a photo tomorrow but i wondered if it needs a pallet?

Anyway I have taken images along the way so I can look at them in reverse to try and put it back together, so heres the first image more to follow later.

You won't find a pallet in that one, it's a cylinder escapement which is why the escape wheel looks so unusual.

Replacing the hair spring is likely to be quite a tricky job as you are unlikely to find one that just drops in, you will need to fit and vibrate a generic one which is a fairly advanced processes.

If you can identify the movement then your best bet is to go for a donor movement with a viable balance and hair spring.

    • 1947 NOS Ambassador 'C'. Actually, the case came without the movement so the movement isn't NOS, but she sure is pretty.

    • one of the problems we have is visible versus invisible. For instance millennium disulfide another high pressure lubricant black in color. I was told by somebody worked for the Boeing company that they had a piston like device somewhere that has eight call it around it to grab it so it has to slide and in the collet has to grab. But if somebody puts that type of dry grease on where grease with that in it it embeds itself basically in the metal and they have to throw the whole part away they get use it all. So I suspect on all the dry powdery lubricants that they will go into all the basically microscopic cracks and crannies of the metaland that's where it is visually at least until you scrub it off your visually going to see it which is good because you want your lubrication the stay word is. But I'm sure it doesn't last forever on the metal it's just a really nice lubrication
    • Thanks for the info. I can't seem to find tech sheets for those either.  I'll muddle my way though 🙂
