Ebay Clocks

Over the past few days I've been having a look on ebay at the clocks for sale . I've seen a few eye openers from utter rubbish to overpriced and bodge ups and some very dodgy marriages with cases and movements. Anyone on here bought a clock from ebay?

Hello George,

Breaking boundaries as usual I see but I am not sure of the legality of such horological rapine :startle: will the time ever be right. :D

Cheers,

Vic

I've bought quit a few on eBay. some in great shape and run like a champ but others i bought as a fixer as i like a challenge. 90% of the time a have been able to get the clocks to run by cleaning and adjusting and cleaning up someones obvious inability to do the repair right. the things some people do to try and fix them leaves allot to be desired. bob

I only purchase clocks (if at the right price) for spares off the Bay. The clocks I purchased were from a local auction house because I could have close inspection before the bidding process. However I have sold clocks I have re-ferbished on the Bay but with little real profit in most cases so now I don,t bother.

In the past 6months I bought 3 clocks 2 elliott timepieces both with platform escapements and 8 day movements. 1 French three piece 8 day pendulum strike on a bell, count wheel strike. That was the good side of things.

I originally bought a French clock with the same type of movement as above. The owner said it was in very good condition. When it arrived to me it would not even go for 24 hours, I emailed many times complaining and each time they insisted I hadn't set it up right, this was after I told them I had been a watch and clock maker with about 30 years behind me. To cut a long story short I took ebays advice, sent it back in its original packaging and asked for a full refund. They then told me it arrived to them severely damaged and would not refund my money. I left it in the hands of ebay and I got all my money back including postage. There's some photos of my clocks somewhere on this forum.

Not only is there some dodgy items on ebay there's some dodgy sellers as well.

In the time I've been using eBay, clock and watches in need of repair it because the just the dregs that are of no use to any one , man nor beast.

I've found it worth paying the extra and get some thing that going.

I like many out there think it's worth a punt, but you know what, it often is'nt, sold as seen no return means its useless.
