Hi there 54, I'll take a wild guess and assume that you're here in the USA? Do you have any movements that you're planning to work on? I've started fooling with this in the last couple of months and I've accumulated a number of non-running movements as well as a new (Chinese) movement that was for one of Mark's online courses. I didn't end up working on that during the course but I'm planning to at some point. At least with that one I'll probably get it going (since I assume it works now).

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Picked up a couple buren pocket watches to tinker with.  So far I'm discovering broken jewels on most of the movements I've played with.   My skill set/tool collection isnt quite there to mess with this repair so they have been set aside.  For now I'm focused on finding fairly inexpensive movements to learn on.  Still searching for that feeling of bringing a movement to life

Where's the balance?  Buy yourself some working movements because you'll know it's your mistake if it doesn't run once reassembled.

I had taken the balance off and set it aside. Balance wheel spoke is hitting the pallet fork bridge.

I gather balance jewels ( upper & lower) settings must be intact then, so you can furthur investigate to find the fault spot on, it can be a case of  one or combination of following .

1- Bent balance rim

2_Broken, worn or bent balance pivot on mainplate side or broken jewel on mainplate.

3- Balance jewel setting on mainplate has moved.

4- Broken upper balance pivot.

Fault diagnosis often  becomes easy when you list all possibilities.

I did. 54 3100 pickup. 383 stroker with 150 shot of nitrous and a built 700r4. Sold it to pay for wife's medical procedure.

Took a 20x loupe to see it but balance jewel in main plate was wobbled out allowing balance wheel to tilt ever so slightly and contact the pallet fork Bridge.
