I have come late to repairing watches, having had my baptism with antique clocks then a brief foray into pocket watches. 

The title i have used here was the name of the guild that clock makers were given in the 16/17th century and when you look at the old grandfather clock movements you would know why.

However given that a constant pressure is applied via the weights they are surprisingly accurate

The style of the hood is called a swan neck, the dial is known as a white dial and it dates from around the 1790's. If you can give me the name on the dial I might be able to get a better date.

There are two William Drysdale's from Edinburgh listed in G H Baillie Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Vol 1 

William Edinburgh 1786 died 1823 & William Edinburgh 1812 - 1823. So your clock was made by the first one I have listed.
