Gale Damage

Recommended Posts

Its been blowing hard all day here in South London.

Just heard a loud noise, went to have a look expecting to find a tile had come off the roof.

Nope, a 3 metre piece of gutter ripped off and flung 10ft into the front garden. [emoji35]

Got to fix it quick before it rains again.

Make sure there's two of you if you get up that ladder in strong winds - one to steady it. I've known experienced builders take a tumble, which is why so many more use scaffolding services these days. H&S and all that...

Strong winds down here in Sussex as well, turning from sunshine to showers and back again in a matter of minutes.

Careful ro63rto, there are still plenty of watches to fix out there waiting for you! Will gives good advise, at least be 2 people! Hope it all gets sorted soon and without much trouble.

Cheers,

Bob

I'm glad to hear you'll have someone holding the ladder.

Last December I had a phone call at 1.00am from my pal to say that he was stuck on his roof in driving rain. He had gone up to clear leaves from the gutter because water was pouring in his front window and was on a flat part of the roof when his ladder was blown down. Luckily he had his phone with him.

Even luckier he wasn't on the ladder when it came down.

The wind, rumbling in the chimney, sounds like thunder and there's a whistling from the fence outside my window. Not a time to be up ladders or on roofs. It's also twenty to midnight so you'd be nuts to be doing either!

The guttering can wait! Plenty of time when the fuss has died down.

Watch a watch video, sink a nightcap. Tomorrow's another day!

Be careful Roberto.

It's been windy here (no surprises here in the Fenlands). The felt was stripped off my shed, another job for the list.

Will do, thanks.

Seems to have calmed down today.

Going up tomorrow IF it doesn't rain again.

    • Certainly looks like a ring that needs unscrewing in that photo. It definitely looks like a thread above the castellated ring as well. Separate to the caseback ring thread. It even looks to be a smaller diameter. I would expect that. Once undone out of its thread, it should fall out of the case. Would it be possible to make a tool shaped like a letter H with one side of the H engaging the castellations in the ring and the other side of the H for you to be able to unscrew it using your hand? Making a tool with 6 'legs' to pick up all of the castellations would be a labour of love.
    • Can anyone advise how to remove the crystal from a Vertex DD case ?  I think I need to unscrew an internal retainer ?  It definitely isn't just pushing out.
    • Alright, the job is done. I first filed down the stubs flat. I then used a Proxxon hand drill first with a 0.5mm bit to score a point to work from, then a 1mm drill bit to properly drill out some lug holes. I just went slowly, checking the depth as I went. I drilled the inside of the lugs, leaving the outsides unblemished. I was worried that drilling at an angle might be a problem, but it turned out fine. Lug holes don't need to be very accurate, so it was actually easy to create holes to easily accommodate a spring bar. The result is a 'good enough' outcome that worked for me. Thanks for your help everyone, loving the hobby so far. I learn so much with each project.
    • Welcome to the forum. Yep not a cheap hobby by any means , Ali Express, the Chinese Amazon has some decent tools but should ask the members their thoughts before purchase.  A little reading to help you along. TZIllustratedGlossary.pdf
