Release the power of the mainspring in Orien 20471

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Here comes the noob with a noob question.. 🙂

today I was doing some research about my Orient cal. 20471.

I found a video of a guy called Doctor Watches and Clocks. Long story (and video) short: the click of that caliber is a tiny spring that sits below the rachet wheel and you can't reach the click without removing the rachet wheel. In the Level 2 of Mike's course he talks about letting down the main spring before disassembly the movement, and how to do it with a "normal" swiss type click (can I refer to it that way?). But how am I suppose to do it with that kind of click?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Will you please post a good picture of the issue you're facing? That is needed with almost any question posted here.

That if the movm.t wasn't running. But if it was, just let it run until it stops, blow air a couple times on the balance wheel complete the process, and there will be no significant or dangerous power in the mainspring anymore.

Removing the ratchet wheel releases the power without putting any stress on anything, the problem you will have is that ratchet will fly out violently so you best put the movement inside a clear plastic bag whilst keeping your finger on the ratchet wheel as you pry it with your screw driver, ratchet wheel will stay under your finger and inside the bag as it is  lifted enough to disengage the barrel arbour.

Many calibers are built the way you describe.

Yessir..but this is as good as I can right now, once I'll disassemble it I'll be able to take a shot myself.1401853080_Seleccin_665.png.c2a6cf71183a3af20355b66db1ba534f.pngThis is the click, and when the rachet wheel is mounted....199886296_Seleccin_666.png.bd266b026505eaed1dcf63254cee4bc3.png You just can't access it.

well, that was my solution..I was just wondering if there was some pro-trick for that kind of mechanism.

Thanks! That solves one of my biggest fears: parts flying across my room.
