Hi all, thank you for the acceptance into this forum.

I am a model engineer who quite happily makes and restores miniature steam locomotives/ traction engines etc, Also mad enough to work on the full-size to as a hobby.

Last year (before this dreaded pandemic  arrived I was fortunate to purchase a Great western railway pocket watch (approximately from the 1920's). Knowing that it is in need of a service and slight repair in places I started to seriously look into the fascinating art of horology and I will say its right up my street, some what annoyed with myself I haven't looked into it beforehand!

I  have purchased a essential tool pack from the auction site we all know and love which has got me to where I am now on the restoration of the cheap watch.

Before I even attempt to carefully service a reasonably rare watch, I bought a very cheap and tired Swiss pocket watch movement. I wounder if yourselves might be able to advise on a number of questions.

  • My movement number (for the Swiss cheap and battered £25 one from eBay is...  "Swiss made 148054" its  a key wound movement, searched the net for it and obviously no information, any idea on dates parts etc?
  • Good tooling needed? Good mainspring winders etc?
  • Good quality watch makers lathe for future projects
  • Looking at doing the distance learning course with the British Horological society, any good feedback on this or other qualifications suitable for watch repairing, as I'm taking quite a serious interest in it!
  • Suppliers for materials- I know a model steam engineering firm supplies a few horological bits and bobs but I'm always interested to know who else is out there.

Any other pointers or points of interest I would be interested to know.

Many thanks
