1960s vintage, No particular value. Broken mainspring replacement learner.

The replacement mainspring (non-auto, st/as1686: 1.60 x .10 x 290mm x 9.0) is listed as obsolete from my supplier, next closest sizes are 2.5x the price of similar springs for some reason. So, being pound foolish and curious as I am, I'm wondering what dimensions can change, and to what effect? I've seen the formulas for calculating mainspring specs, I'm looking for an understanding of the variable interplay without graphing out all 4 variables (5 including availability and price)

1.6 width. Can't be increased due to barrel. Can a 1.5 be used, looser in the barrel, calculating up for thickness and down for length?

.10 thickness. increase to .105 adds power, could lead to overbanking or other problems? Possibly less so in older watch that might have suffered low amplitude at this point. Decrease to .095, possibly causing low amplitude, however I've heard that newer springs are more powerful at same thickness, so perhaps this is possible. Either change effects volume of barrel filled by mainspring.

290mm length. Longer and shorter springs effect power reserve directly, also barrel volume available for the spring to be under tension. How does this effect the operation of the movement, how much longer or shorter can a mainspring be before other problems arise?

9.0 package size: can't fit larger size into barrel. Can a smaller package work, say a 8.0, will it just uncoil into the larger barrel and work?

I'm looking at a replacement options of

1.60 x .10 x 260 x 8: shorter 30mm, 1mm smaller package

1.60 x .095 x 280 x 8.5: shorter 10mm, .thinner by .005mm, .5mm smaller package.

1.60 x .095 x 320 x 9: longer 30mm, thinner by .005mm

1.60 x .095 x 280 x 8.5: shorter 10mm, .thinner by .005mm, .5mm smaller package

1.60 x .105 x 240 x 8.5: much shorter 50mm, thicker .005mm, .5mm smaller package

1.60 x .105 x 300 x 9: longer by 50mm, thicker by .005mm

 

I'm sure most/all of these will work just fine for this application, looking for experienced insight.

If those are your options go with the first one. Maybe a slight reduction in power reserve. At that height you can also consider 1.55 or 1.5 height, all other dimensions the same, no difference in performance.

looking up mainsprings is always interesting for instance if I look at my mainspring catalog for your model number I get GR4502 exactly what's quoted above. The only minor problem is on your list that would be mainspring  on the bottom and those numbers do not agree exactly with your numbers? If I go to a different site very bottom link to get numbers that look like your numbers almost. Actually we get a list of cross-references. Then if we take the MS – 711 K number and do a search we come up with three links. or you really want to be cheap about it you can go to eBay just change the part number a little bit drop-off the MS and just looked the 711 K looks like they're about $10 each and several are available.

    • Islands are interesting places to live depending upon their size and other factors. This is a bigger island and it has a bridge to get there at least on one end. It's also big enough that you don't have to go someplace else to get things typically. It can be a problem if you get a job in Seattle though. Yes I've known of people who commuted from the island to Seattle for a job and I don't quite remember how many hours it took but it took a long time. So basically islands are nice if you don't have to leave very often.

    • isn't it nice to have a decent case open or when the case doesn't want to be opened? In the case of a Rolex watch that supposed to pass specific water resistant testing you probably do need to tighten the back down. But they shouldn't be tightened so much that they risk stripping the threads out. Then the other problem that comes up is the gaskets can start to disintegrate and then getting the back off can be quite a challenge unless you have a really good tool and perhaps some penetrating oil to loosen things up. Yes really nice case marking. When I was in school we were taught to mark the cases and  the American watch and clockmakers Institute even had a? So if you joined at one time they would give you an identification number. They were explaining or giving an example of if the watches ever found in you have a unique number they can perhaps figure out the history of the watch or identify the body it's attached to for instance not that that probably comes up that often. So you got a unique number and even made a special metal stamp that you can purchase. It wasn't a super big aggressive stamp but still it left a mark in the back of the case. Then I heard from people at work on Rolex watches they were using a felt pen indelible but later on they decided that was bad because apparently the ink could release  chemicals although it seems like once it's dry that shouldn't be an issue. Then of course today was nice is you can keep computer records sealed have to mark anything at all I personally find it's best to leave no reference behind that you were even there. Especially when you have a beautiful watch that has no markings at all and now it has your scribbling all over it not good typically if there is a typical and watch repair?  a lot of minor repairs you don't need to do a complete servicing. But beyond a certain point you're going to have to take apart a lot of stuff you're going to disrupt the lubrication even if it looks perfect right now and yes you might as well just go ahead the service the whole thing. also in a watch like this where a lot of things seem to be going on the complete service would be better then you'll know exactly where you stand versus dealing with unknown mysteries for prior repair.
