Pivot or jewel

I found a replacement escape wheel but the top pivot is a little to big.. Should I thin out pivot or make jewel hole in top plate larger.

Depends on the tools you have. To reduce the pivot you will need either a lathe or a jacot tool. If you choose to change the jewel you will need a jeweling tool or you might achieve it with a staking tool. Both methods would work.

I have a staking set and a lathe but the lathe is a sherline 4400 I have no experience with either .I am not sure but I believe I need collets for the lathe so I can work on smaller pieces. So I guess making the jewel hole bigger is the way to go.. any suggestions on how to go about it.

I am not sure how to make a jewel hole bigger. There was a post on this forum a while ago doing this job using diamond paste & a Dremel. However getting the size hole correct is going to be difficult. If it was me I would just purchase the correct size jewel and replace.

Looks like it could be  @szbalogh video? He is the master of replacing jewels and repairing pivots? 

If i would do it i would replace the jewel? If that is possible? think it would be difficult to enlarge the hole? 

As you probably need to set the plate up in a lathe or some kind of device to get the hole perfectly straight?

I would rather do one repair or the other replacing parts is to easy..Been there done that.

Jacot tool should be used to reduce the pivot diameter.

But here i would use the lathe with a wax collet. Just put a small brass rod in the lathe and turn a thin cone, fill it with shellack and put the wheel inside. It can be perfectly centered while the shellack is still hot. Then use a fine hone or steel with diamond paste to reduce the pivot diameter. The file should be supported on the parallel support to keep cylindrical shape of the pivot.
