Just a quick introduction. Long time lurker originally brought over from watching Marks videos. I'm very much an amateur and stick with pocket watches on the whole and have a good few awaiting parts, though I have played with some clocks and have a nice station clock that has a lot of sentimental value from one of the old shops in town that my Grandad rescued at some point in the past. I had my first play with a wristwatch a few weeks ago that housed a 2836-2 movement which was interesting as it went a bit wrong but I managed to sort things out. Those parts are very small aren't they?

I tend to dabble on and off because of my work shifts and I don't like to tackle a movement when I'm too tired because things inevitably go wrong. Hopefully people won't mind me asking a few questions and sharing their ideas on why something won't work and "if" I can offer any advice then I most certainly will.

Welcome to the site mistergrumpy! I definitely say: Do ask questions, by no means, that's a main reason why we exist, to share our collective knowledge. Yes, pocket watches are fun to work on as long as parts are able to be sourced, and wrist watch movements, like the one you worked on, can be very involved...mainly due to the size. I'm happy you could sort that one out, it is a nice movement, strong and proven...and yes, you are doing great and know when to work on watches. I do the same, if I'm tired I don't even look at them.

Cheers,

Bob

    • I went with 8.90£ because 12th century Italian mathematicians are always excellent topics to bring up when trying to get your guests to go home.
    • As a beginner, I’ve found this forum invaluable. I doubt I would’ve persevered without its support. I’ve had the confidence to attempt things that seemed to me impossible only because I knew there were patient and giving folks gathered around this watering hole, available to share their skill.    I would very much like to know where to go if this one dries up and everyone needs to decamp.  There’s something special about the folks gathered in this group.  How to keep in touch?
    • After a 3-week work fiasco that took up 137% of my time, I was finally able to get back to restoring a G. Boley 8mm lathe I picked up on eBay. I still need to do a bit of polishing on the tailstock but it works very nicely. Before and after pictures below. In any case, when I was reassembling the motor I wasn't quite sure which side the pully attached to, or if it matters. My question is ... does it matter? The listing photo below shows it the reverse of how I have it now, but it seemed that the cord and the reversing lever(s) should be on the right away from the belt.
